Your Chess Gear Pics
Thinly veiled brag that I just got a new board, but I didn't see anything like this so oh well.
Here is my favorite board/pieces/clock combo. Let's see yours!

Re: Your Chess Gear Pics
Wow, looks very nice. I bought my first set just a couple weeks ago, so its not fancy. I needed something I could have at hand everywhere. Very well made for its price imo, ~60$.

Re: Your Chess Gear Pics
I think I've played on that type of board several times, OP, and I love it.

Re: Your Chess Gear Pics
Beautiful set Gorgonian. I really like that detailing on the pieces.
Here are a couple pics of my setup. I still have only used it for analysis, there aren't too many people that are serious OTB players.

Re: Your Chess Gear Pics
we kinda did this in a thread ballin' chess sets a couple years ago
http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/14...s-sets-525591/
but what the hell.....
I have a House of Staunton set that's kinda pretty but I don't use it much and thing is, it's a pain in the ass - Minnesota humidity can crack the pieces very easily
terrible pic...but here's the pic that got me to buy it - LOL
but for what I really like, I use a blue vinyl board with the Chesscafe International pieces - I like short stubby pawns and really simple knights - (like a DGT board if I can ever afford one ) - note the Chronos touchpad Blitz clock - (smaller yet still good for most tourneys) -
if I can use this setup at a tourney, I will, and it's what I use when I go to study at coffeeshops

Re: Your Chess Gear Pics
Sorry but that blue board is horrible
I had every intention of getting a nice chess set when I moved here but then somebody got me one as a present which wasn't exactly what I'd have purchased. I feel bad if I just "upgrade" it within a year.. it's like saying "thanks but no thanks". I guess at some point I'll get something nice though.
Anyway, it'd probably just gather dust.

Re: Your Chess Gear Pics
I don't use this board at all, but it could make for an interesting pic. My brother got it for me from Africa, hand-carved. I think I lined up the pieces in order of pawn, knight, bishop, rook, queen, and king, but I'm really not sure about the king and queen. The board isn't perfectly level, and the bottoms of the pieces aren't all so level, and the pieces are quite carved to be straight up, so it doesn't take much to turn it into a game of dominos.

Re: Your Chess Gear Pics
It would be hell to actually try to play with, but as an art piece I think that African set is A+.

Re: Your Chess Gear Pics
Awesome stuff in here. I particularly love rockfsh's top pic set, whiskeytown's set (the reddish board is awesome, but not a fan of the reddish pieces--still very awesome and would love to have it), and TexAg06's set. Others are cool, too, but those are my faves.
I just ordered a wooden set from USCF for $50 that I'm really looking forward to having. I bought a mousepad board with it, which I've never used before. Hope it's good. The price is great, so I thought it would be worth a shot. Didn't buy a good wooden board to go with it yet, but plan to down the road. I'd like to use it as a tournament set, so I will probably buy a folding wooden board to go with it down the road some time, along with one of those deluxe bags.
Every dollar spent is another rating point I gain, right?
Right?
Guys?

Re: Your Chess Gear Pics
oh yah I get 50 ratings points for every set I buy
I really want a DGT timeless set of pieces - I think I can buy the pieces separately without the board - - I just like the smaller squat size of the pieces - I don't know what to say except it's aesthetically pleasing - I think Games By James sells a similar set called "French Staunton"
I may buy a 90 buck set that's similar with a foldup board from wholesale chess - may get out of a mortgage payment this month after refinancing
I like Rockfish's set too - almost bought the NY 1929 staunton set from HOS that had the same board (I think it was a copy of the NY1929 set) - anyways..down the line maybe
remember reading about this - did u guys know half the cost/effort of a chess set is in the Knights? - that's where all the handcarving goes

Re: Your Chess Gear Pics
I don't wanna let this thread die - EVERYONE should be posting chess gear - LOL
as stated earlier, I have a mini version of the pieces similar to DGT (3 inch king) - it fits on a 10 inch board with just a little bit of room (king base is about 1 1/8th inch diameter) but I'd like to get another board with 1 3/4 squares or so
leaning towards the blue or green version of this board (same as Gorganan) - pieces are standard light and stained dark, but not ebony like his)

Re: Your Chess Gear Pics
I have the cheapest roll-up mat and plastic set I could get on USCF sales.
I refuse to buy nicer chess equipment no matter how tempting it is, because this can already be an expensive hobby and I have to cut down somewhere. Tournament fees, books, ICC membership, USCF membership, transportation and lodging for tournaments. If I didn't draw the line somewhere, my extremely indulgent wife might become less generous with all that money she earns.
That said, when I make master, I'm going to treat myself to a very nice chess table.

Re: Your Chess Gear Pics
I don't have a nice "at home" board yet. My only regret in regards to my uscf set is not buying the weighted pieces.
