Does anybody remember the days of Yahoo chess??

Like maybe 1995-2005. Great 1 min games back then

There was a guy, "VeryOldMan", he was the GOAT.

Yahoo "lag" chess was great. it's where i learned the game.

Please, reminisce....

If you were lucky 2 be there

fun games esp the rotating 1-min pool.

i remember the highest i hit in the 1-min games was ~2700. prolly half the players called me a prog and the other half called me a pusher.

"pusher" dont know how i forgot that.

I really don't recall peak ratings for anybody. Weren't people over 3000?

The "progs" anyway

ICC's still the best in the biz today. There's more competition around but for the most serious, competitive chess on the most stable server with the best lag and disconnect protection - Your only real option is ICC.

ChessTempo has a decent live server up now but it's nothing compared to ICC.

Lichess is broken now that they implemented the pools the way they did. Specifically a site for casuals.

PlayChess is your only other legitimate option for quality online chess other than ICC. Fritz 15 + PlayChess = Pretty Great, actually.

FIDE Online Arena: The only way to put up real FIDE numbers without going to a live tournament in a major city. It works well, too.

Chess.com: LOL

I imagine how few untitled players there will be in live FIDE tourneys in a few years. The ACM (Arena Candidate Master) title is lifetime and requires simply to maintain an online rating (in 1 of the 3 time controls) not lower than 1100 for any 50 / 100 / 150 rapid / blitz / bullet rated Arena games in a row plus pay a tiny (€5) title fee and, during the pursuit, the membership fees (€25 a year), whereas there's more room for opponent selection than live. Almost anyone who plays chess decently enough not to be embarrassed to play in a live tourney is capable of becoming at least an ACM. (For others' info, the AFM / AIM / AGM titles have the same requirements except the slightly higher title fee and the online rating targets that are 1400 / 1700 / 2000).

So far, though, there don't seem to exist many people who're proud of their AGM titles like Kingscrusher is of his CM one. The only one whose interview (not even in English) I've found on Youtube is AGM Nik Ahmad Farouqi.
