World Rapid and Blitz 2016

Ivanchuk leading after day 2 of Rapid.

Made the thread just to share this Radjabov gem.

Ivanchuk wins!

Tiebreak win, though. Grischuk and Carlsen also scored 11/15.

Quite a comeback for Carlsen, and quite a disappointing finish for Nepomniachtchi, who was leading with 10/13 undefeated and finished with two losses.

Re: World Rapid and Blitz 2016

The guy who's eligible via winning the Djibouti championship & went 0/15 in rapid just won a game in blitz!

https://chess24.com/en/watch/live-to...ip-2016/5/1/54

I would have bet money on him to go 0/21 at evens, I think.

Surprised his opponent resigned - maybe it was a time issue?

They corrected the result. If the match is accurate & he lost on time in a winning position I feel sorry for him.

0/15 in rapid? Wow. That actually should inspire improving players. If someone can lose 15 in a row at that level, we certainly can put up with it and learn from it at our level.

He was eligible via winning the Djibouti championship. I browsed a few of his rapid matches & would be surprised if his true ELO was as high as 1600.

I still don't get the punchline. What's the deal with the Djibouti Championship? How is he qualifying for world class events if he's that weak?

Re: World Rapid and Blitz 2016

Eligibility was ELO of 2500 (maybe peak ELO of 2500?) or national champion. My guess is a poor East African country with a population of 850,000 doesn't have very many chess players. Hence a national champion with an ELO of 1400 or 1500 or whatever. There's no punchline.

That's crazy. Well, I guess he got some pretty invaluable experience in over the course of the tournament but still...no matter who/what the situation is, 0/15 is going to hurt a little.

That awkward moment when both the interviewee (Chucky) and the interviewer (Nastya Karlovich) speak English much worse than Russian but had to do the interview in English.
