Time management: Lets break down the 3 minute games on ICC

I really like the 3-minute game button. I get a reasonably rated opponent at this time control. I am hovering around mid 1700's. By tomorrow evening, I want to try and spike 1900.

What time management should I do in this as to the three minutes? I am a slow opening player with d4 as white and semi closed tendancies as black.

I am thinking that I should never blip below a minute unless I am well into the endgame.

Opinions...?

This could be an interesting thread, but gaining 150 rating points in 2 days is a bit ridiculous, isn't it?

I can't manage such short times without an increment.

You are probably right as I am beating my head going up and down in rating.

Handle Mightymaron 1745 3 -minute

It seems silly to talk about time management for 3 minute games
But basically:
1. Know your openings cold
2. Practice seeing simple tactics. (win material -> swapamatic)
3. Practice formulating plans quickly. Easier to play with map
4. PRactice basic endings against computers till you can do them in your sleep

As a bonus you'll actually be better at slow chess also. But you'll definitely be a killer at blitz

Re: Time management: Lets break down the 3 minute games on ICC

Well I woke up today with my 3-minute rating over 1800.

The first point that I am trying to do is to not get below a minute. I was losing on time more often than losing in positions that I am in now.

I am going to try abc chess instead of fancy attacks.

Will see how it goes today

I think it depends on your goals. There are really two types of blitz players. Those who play normal chess very quickly and those who play blitz as an entirely different form of chess. One is conducive to improving at chess as a whole - including blitz, the other conducive to improving only at blitz but can provide much greater results much more rapidly and easily.

Can you expand on that, Do it Right?

Very standard actually. Given that you win/lose 16 points per game on average, that would only be a 9 game upswing

I've played a few 3.0 thx to this thread... started off pretty well but then got on a 5 game losing streak. Ending the day at 2212 and we can expect to see this go down tomorrow.

Well it looks like I can not manage a nine game upswing.

Around 1814 as of right now on three-minute.

It is appearing that if I can get out of the opening in decent shape, my plan on not going below 1 minute is paying slight dividends in regards to cheap clock wins.

Whether I am improving I do not know, but it has bumped my rating up slightly.

Re: Time management: Lets break down the 3 minute games on ICC

I've played over 30 000 bullets in my life so I really don't mind playing with less than a minute. I think this is why I'm doing so well despite the fact that I had never played these before reading this thread. It seems that most of the players are 5.0 regulars and turned into 3.0 players. Therefore, I have a good edge in the endgames.

The real issue about time management in any form of chess is simply to make sure you don't use too much time as opposed to your opponent. In the 3.0, I guess you can consider yourself in trouble the moment you have 1 to 1.5 minute less left than your opponent. So you shouldn't bother getting below 1 min that much.

I have tried both ways and it is about the same to me. If I play fast I do get a few time wins but also a few extra losses due to blunders.

I want to persue better positions in the opening with a little more time. It cost me rating points in three minute. I just push and try to do standard pawn liberating moves

Gimmicks...by hook or by crook. Anything. My rating hovers right where it should be at it appears. Patzer I be but I still enjoy the game.
