Caruana's Jekyll and Hyde performance continues, he's now 0/2 with white and 2/2 with black through four rounds. How long can *that* pace continue?

Early action today - Anand in trouble and Moro choosing a variation that seems more suitable for blitz

*posting after 29.Bd7 in Carlsen-Anand* You weren't kidding, geez. Playing through the game it's really amazing how Carlsen is able to get such a crushing position against a player like Anand while playing relatively straightforward moves.

wlrs, enlighten us por favor. What's Moro thinking playing an opening like that? As far as I know, it's known to be very passive for black and he has trouble creating active play. Surely he can't have full compensation for the exchange, can he?

Anand resigned after 29.Bd7.

That pretty much sums it up for Kramnik-Moro

And Moro resigned. Really strange game from him.

Nakamura played 3...g6 against the Ruy today. I've never seen that before. Thoughts from Ruy guys?

Looks like Andreikin is continuing to try to maintain his 50% score.

Surely Gelfand-Carlsen will end in a draw, right? With the rooks traded and such a symmetrical pawn structure, can either side really hope to have winning chances?

Morozevich is playing aggressively against Karjakin's Nimzo. Very interesting game and curious to see how it turns out.

wow @ caruana-kramnik. wonder how much of this is home prep. 3.-g6 is playable - not sure if 6.Bxc6 is the usual choice

Surely has to be quite a bit, right? That game is nuts.

Nakamura just beat Anand, dude is en fuego right now. He lost to Mamedyarov in the first round but has since gone on to score 4.5/5 with wins over Anand, Kramnik, Caruana, Karjakin, and a draw to Andreikin. Geeeeez.

Going 4.5/5 against those five players is insane.

Just beating 4 of the 8 highest rated players in the world, no big thing.

Edit: (while "only" drawing #25 in the middle of the run, tsk tsk)

After his win today, Nakamura is 2789 on the live rating list and his performance rating is 2959. His remaining games are white against Gelfand, Black against Carlsen (yikes), and White against Morozevich. Based on how he's playing right now, I think the two games with white are very winnable. Holding Carlsen to a draw would be pretty great.

In Carlsen-Morozevich, I'm surprised Carlsen played 5. c3 instead of the Bc4-Ng5 stuff that Kasparov used to play against Karpov in the 4...Nd7 lines. I'm posting this after 14...Qd5 and the position looks extremely equal, black has no problems. Maybe Carlsen was worried that Morozevich had some prep in the main line?

The Ruy in Karjakin-Caruana is interesting because they're continuing the recent trend of playing quiet, d3 stuff. I really am enjoying this pendulum swing away from massive amounts of theory.

Kramnik-Andreikin looks equal, but Kramnik is really good in these Catalan type positions. I wouldn't be surprised to see him squeak out a win here.

Is there any way Mamedyarov-Anand isn't a draw?

After 18...Qa5 in Nakamura-Gelfand, Houdini is showing about an equal position. I'm not a Sicilian guy, but that position looks easier to play as black. Black has great dark square control and the g7 bishop has unlimited scope. What do y'all think about it?

Looks like Gelfand has this game wrapped up. He doesn't seem to get that much respect, perhaps, but he's been on quite a run this past year.

Indeed, really nice job from Gelfand.

And Andreikin beat Kramnik? Wow. Really didn't think Kramnik would lose a position like that.

Nakmura lost to Carlsen. Again. Wikipedia shows that Carlsen's classical record against Naka is now +7-0=13. Undefeated, with a 67.5% score. Now, 67.5% translates to 127 rating points, and there's no shame in being rated 127 points behind Magnus. Peter Leko is currently rated 127 points behind him, and is ranked 18th in the world. However, with all due respect to Leko, that's not where Nakamura wants to be. Now sure, it's your overall rating that matters more than your "projected" rating based on your games against any one player - but if you want to be the best, you've got to beat the best. He's top five in the world right now despite his score against Carlsen, but we all know that he has world championship aspirations, and he'll never get there with a 32.5% score against the highest rated player. It will be interesting to see if he can ever get over his Magnus bugaboo and take a full point, even just once. Looks like the Sinquefield Cup in September will give him his next two chances.

If Caruana beats Andreikin tomorrow with white, he'll become just the 7th member of the 2800 club - and at just 20 years old. Pretty amazing!

Naka did a Vassily there...congrats to Gelfand. who would have thought. Seems like he really wanted to show'em since his WC match.

Amazing, first place in two super-strong tournaments in a row for Gelfand. This is a guy who had, frankly, made a career out of never winning major tournaments. At age 44 now he is making it happen.
