I hope Morozevich's form improves from how he played in Greece, or this field will tear him to shreds.

No kidding. This caliber of field isn't forgiving at all.

Getting close now, once again no Kramnik and Topalov. I thought we might see them both in Norway but since kramnik pulled out maybe we'll have to wait another 5 years before they play each other in a classical game.

It will be interesting to see if Karjakin and Caruana can continue recent good results and if we get a new 2800 player from this event, or if Carlsen gets revenge after 2nd place in his home country's tournament. I'd back Magnus, I think he's mad :-)

Wow, Naka, 7/9 in the blitz! Impressive!

Wow, impressive indeed. I just went and played through his games, they're a lot of fun. Naka plays some pretty eccentric stuff in blitz. Great for watching.

First round is underway, all games are currently in progress. Carlsen-Kramnik takes place this round, which is a heck of a way to start things off.

Nakamura: first place in the blitz event, first choice of draw, takes white in round 1, loses his first classical game (with white).

Caruana: last place in the blitz event, last choice of draw, stuck with black in round 1, wins his first classical game (with black, against Anand).

Did y'all see the game Carlsen-Kramnik, 1-0 today? Just incredible. Magnus was again able to win what appeared to be a drawn position, this time against Kramnik. I can hardly imagined the skill required to win a position like that against someone that strong. He's amazing.

No. I did not see that game. The game *I* saw was the dead draw with no play left in the position that prompted me to turn chessbomb off and get back to work without bothering to watch the conclusion. I figured I'd pop back on at my lunch break, verify the 1/2-1/2 result, and then post something snarky about the semi-controversy of the Candidate's tie-break not being resolved today.

Wow Magnus, you're really* good at even endgames.

*really really really REALLY

Well said. I just love that he plays pretty much whatever opening he wants, not hardly any deep sharp prep lines, then goes on to outplay every top player in the world from an equal position.

He truly understands chess.

Kramnik looks to be in poor form this tournament. Today he had a better position against Nakamura, with an extra pawn and evaluated as a +0.94 after move 23. As I type this move 40 was just played and the position is now evaluated as -1.37 for Nakamura. Not sure what is going on with Kramnik right now.

not surpise, the way he play the endgame vs carlsen last game, it was horrible.

I was playing chess all day, and just now checked the round 3 results. Caruana beat Carlsen? With BLACK? What happened there??? Also, Fabiano is now up to 2796.6 in the live ratings, one more win away from cracking 2800.

it looks like he beat anand and carlsen with black and lost to gelfand with white.

ok im a chess newb but i watched a daniel king video on you tube on caruana v gelfand. it was a Najdorf and caruana just collapsed. caruana made some pretty bad moves starting at like move 26. he went h4 which allowed gelfand to close up the postion, then he avoided a queen exchange and just let black f his day up.

naka stuck it to vlade. i like naka since he plays online and is american. i would say he is my favorite player. i think naka had a heroic effort vs vlad in the past olympiad iirc and that is when he became my favorite.

yeah this game was all balls lol.

Yeah Caruana's loss to Gelfand was really bad. Cliffs of the game:
1) Go into a long theoretical line of the English Attack
2) Get nothing out of the opening as White
3) Fall apart

Mamedyarov played the Pirc today against Karjakin. Got to admire that.
