Tal Memorial 2012
Featuring all of the top 5 rated players in the world with an average rating of 2775 this tournament goes from 7th to 19th of June.
Line up:
2835 - #01 - Magnus Carlsen
2823 - #02 - Levon Aronian
2803 - #03 - Vladimir Kramnik
2784 - #04 - Teimour Radjabov
2783 - #05 - Hikaru Nakamura
2770 - #09 - Fabiano Caruana
2769 - #10 - Alexander Morozevich
2761 - #11 - Alexander Grischuk
2738 - #16 - Evgeny Tomashevsky
2708 - #36 - Luke McShane
I'm super pumped for this. The top rated players in the world combined with rising star 19 year old Caruana, the always entertaining Moro, the best amatuar in the world - Luke Mcshane, and my personal favourite player - Nakamura. There's no soft spots in this field.

Re: Tal Memorial 2012
Thanks for posting, I had absolutely no idea this tournament was about to start. What a fantastic event, I can't wait to see how it plays out. Like you said, there are no weak players in the field. This one is going to be VERY interesting.
It's strange to see the top 5 players in the world not include Anand.
Predictions everyone?

Re: Tal Memorial 2012
Wow. That is one packed lineup. 5 out of the top 5, 8 out of the top 11 players in the world in one tournament. I'm going to go with the shocking prediction that Carlsen will take it, but I'm mostly curious about how Aronian will do. He's always been very strong top but it seems like he's been playing on an entirely new level lately. I'm curious if it was just a streak of really good form or if the new Aronian is here to stay. And of course Nakamura is always interesting. His results in high level tournaments are all over the place so I think he'll definitely be the wildcard.
I also wasn't aware this tournament was starting so soon. Thanks for posting it!

Re: Tal Memorial 2012
No worries, yeah it took me by surprise too, I think it did with everyone. The Tal Memorial normally runs in November but I read some kibitzers say that at the request of FIDE, because of something to do with the candidates, they moved to an earlier date this year. Obviously they then did a worthless job of making the chess community aware of the change.
I agree win Do it Right with my predictions; It's hard to go past Carlsen as he's been winning damn near everything in the past few years. Naka a wildcard as usual and is completely capable of winning, and Aronian being the favourite after Magnus. I predict that Kramnik won't place in the top 4 and that this won't yet be Caruana's breakthrough event.

Re: Tal Memorial 2012
an on-form Kramnik should have every chance of winning this event if things go right for him. I'd say 40% Carlsen, 30% Aronian, 15% Kramnik, 10% Nakamura, 5% anyone else. But there has been a long tournament break for most players involved, so anything can happen. At any rate it's going to be an awesome sports week, chess in the afternoon and soccer in the evening.

Re: Tal Memorial 2012
Don't care who wins as long as it's not Naka tbh.
Go Mcshane!

Re: Tal Memorial 2012
The blitz tourney starts today, correct? I really like how they're using the blitz tournament to determine starting numbers as opposed to drawing lots. Plus the blitz tourney (3'+2") has a pretty nice prize fund.
Can't wait for this thing to kick off.

Re: Tal Memorial 2012
Official site only in Russian -_- The link names are in English so one can at least guess. Will be interesting to see how Tomashevsky holds up against the big boys, he had a stellar 2011 (lost only one game the whole year or something like that).

Re: Tal Memorial 2012
live coverage is seriously awesome, of course the transmission isn't bug-free but that's hard to expect in blitz.
So far Morozevich on a roll, Kramnik with 0,5/5.
