Day 48

Got my spanish associate to now input the PGN for Caro Khan book by Lars Schandorff.

Day 49

Went down to a school to do chess coaching. Taught an kasparov attacking game to the youngsters in the class. I started doing chess coaching again only recently, cuz I'm in need of some cash.

Went to play OTB at Townhall station

Day 51

After losing most of the week to the new pokemon game that came out :P I spent the day going out with a GM to movies, dinner and talking about how to prepare my chess preparation as well as miscellaneous topics.

Had to see the bad news of Karjakin losing game 10 because I was gonna put alot of money on Carlsen getting 3-1, but didn't have money on my sport bet account and had to wait for my friend to transfer.

I considered this kinda a break week (or waste of time) so hopefully i get back into the study. Trying to finish the marin vol. 3 book tmmr.

Thinking of punishing myself to play the state blitz champs next saturday for missing out a previous tournament. In that case going in a week lockdown to prepare my lines.

Played some online games, but my internet is still so trash. Bought a new mouse so gonna try to not smash this one...

Played online and got sh*t talked by some Israeli master. Went back and forth only to lose 4-6 to him.

Just studying opening isn't working out for me. I need to learn to skip pointless lines that I'm unlikely to play, or I'm just gonna not get motivated enough at all.

Gonna make a comprehensive training schedule for the next 40 something or so days cuz I just have to...

100 posts of "I play too much blitz because I love it". Next post "I'm going to punish myself by making myself play blitz". Yeah, good to see nothing has changed ITT.

Pretty classic treatment of a IQP position:

2. manoeuvre my way to trade down minor piece
3. line up Alekhine's gun at the Isolani

Day 56

Spent the day going down to teach chess lessons for $50/hr

Gave the kids all the mating patterns puzzles from Art of Checkmate and surprisingly they got alot of them despite being beginners, even some of the themes like Anatasia's mate. However when I watch them play games, half the pieces are hanging and many times both kings are in check. Many children are easily distracted by many ongoing pieces and situations but when focusing on a puzzle they can do well.

Went to play with friends after.

Day 57

(12/1/2016)

It's the first day of december and I finally finished Vol. 3 of the Marin book. Luckily I paid around $400+ for the caro and semi slav book to be fully inputted into PGN.

I've learnt some important lessons while studying opening lines, I will talk about this on a later post and apply said concept to my remaining 2 Marin English books. I will also write/share in detail my repertoire on this thread, I'm not really worried about people knowing it because those books are well known anyway.

Day 59

Still in the middle of my WSOP circuit grind, unfortunately couldn't play the state blitz because I had to play day 2 of a WSOP event

Day 60

Finally got backed to 2100 on 1 0.

https://www.chess.com/livechess/game?id=1836659077

Also received a good chunk of the Caro book which is good, now that I will have two book soon covered and can use my memory skills to really get the critical lines done.

Day 61

Have less than 40 days now (39 to be exact), so things aren't looking good. With some concentration and hardwork (abeit with a work schedule), I can still fit in maybe around 300 hours of preparation. I will detail a plan to how to allocate those work times.

https://www.chess.com/livechess/game?id=1839715970

A 3 0 blitz game that I should in no way be losing, after getting such a good position. Unfortunately this means my tactics need alot of refreshing and I will probably dedicate a good portion of hours to that.
NL Loki's Chess Improvement and Motivation Thread Quote

I have around 300 hours, but probably less, to efficiently use.

I think there's generally three main area of focus: opening, tactics and endgame.

I just think the opening is a must, it naturally leads into middlegame with an associated plan. Playing black especially is important to know the critical variations because it's alot less forgiving than being white (who alot of the times, is punished by an equal game when playing a suboptimal moves).

A few things I learnt from doing the Volume 3 is that inputting side variations into your PGN is an insane hassle and it is best to be selective to decide what to put if at all. Unless it is highly forcing lines such as the sharpest variations of the sicilian dragon/nadjorf, you can get away with no knowing the 10th move alternative to some rarely played lines. Especially with English, the lines aren't forcing anyway. Furthermore, it's best to focus on responses the opponent is likely to play. Expecting them to play some weird critical line that involves a sacrifice or weird moves with non standard ideas (Na6, Qd7, g5 in some of the lines I studied in 1. c4 c5) is probably NOT worth the time to going over, especially you are likely to never meet them in your life, at least not against sub 2400s. Most players, including strong GMs will tend to play natural moves or the moves that makes most sense to a plan (they are rarely gonna do something like ...e6 then suddenly change plan with ...g6, weakening their dark squares).

In terms, of my white repertoire, I'm going through Volume 2 of the Marin English book which I think is the most relevant.
Volume 3 is abit less useful (I've spent like 30 days on that! ) because it deals with 1. c4 c5 which is pretty rare to begin with. In volume 2, I will quickly go through Anti Slav lines (chapter 2-11), Anti QG and QGD line (12-25) and theres one chapter addressing each the other bigs (Grunfield, KID, Dutch, Owen). Volume 1 (1. c4 e5) I'll do after because some of the lines involve either the Botvinnik system or lines that are unlikely to be played. I did however, once lost a theoretical 1. c4 e5 game against a strong player that I was prepared for (cuz tactics lol, which brings me to my next section)Once I've done everything, I will go back to summarising the Volume 3 (1. c4 c5) lines.

My black repertoire is alot more memorisation but with my trusted associates overseas inputting the PGN for me, I should do fine and hopefully be done memorising before new years. I would expect a number of people would wonder into the Botvinnik variation or the Meran variation. The same goes with the classical lines of the Caro Khan. I'M USING A NOTEBOOK TO NOTE DOWN THE LINES I END UP LEARNING IN MY OPENING STUDYING TO KEEP TRACK WHAT I'VE GOT DONE.

Now this brings me to tactics. Which is just a matter of putting in hours on chesstempo (way better than chess.com tactics trainer) to keep myself sharp and endgame studies on CT-ART as well as the problems in the book, Forcing Chess is keep myself aware of the creative options that might suddenly arise. I aspect to spend maybe 1-2 per day for this, which include time while travelling to work etc.).

Endgame is a whole different beast and is something I expect to spend maybe every night looking through Muellers Videos. I will do this along with studying ICS strategy sections as a whole because the whole topic is quite strategic and intuitive in nature. The technical side is addressed by the Dovretsky's books but those are prob not that useful for me atm.

Day 66

So the good news is that my poker playing is probably over for the rest of the year, as I finished my WSOP series with no cash. So this means I get to spent all my time on chess now The bad news is now I pretty much have no money for coaching and need to find a way to go to New Zealand to play the Zonals.

Been a while since getting back to battling 2200s...

https://www.chess.com/livechess/game?id=1846830121

Pretty instructive I think, you don't usually see c4 push in a french like line, but I evaluated that light square weakness is more pressing than central pressure on d4. The whole game was pretty "Russian-like" in that I prophylactically reduced counterplay until my opponent runs out of moves and have to make concession

https://www.chess.com/livechess/game?id=1847325194

https://www.chess.com/news/aronian-s...ndon-lead-4295

I tend to read quite a few chess articles and even in super GM level, they often forget their preparation and just play into losing lines (see Nakamura v So)

I also keep getting Botvinnik lines in my Semi Slav, its about time I started prepping for these...

Hard to play such highly theoretically and sharp lines in 3 0

So I just realise I've never posted my opening study in detail on here, I might as well do it here lol...

Opening Study

Chapter 3 - Semi Slav: Botvinnik Variation (16. Rb1 !?)

1. d4 d5 2. c4 c6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Nf3 e6 5. Bg5 dxc4 6. e4 b5 7. e5 h6 8. Bh4 g5 9. Nxg5 hxg5 10. Bxg5 Nbd7 11. g3

Sometimes black plays 11. exf6 and instead of transposing with 12. g3 go into inferior lines of:

12. Be2, no fianchetto is bad, hack plan Bh6-xg5 and hack 0-0 kingside

12. h4!?, take f6 pawn and hold

12. Qf3, white can't 0-0 or Bb7 too strong has too 0-0-0 and can still hack steam rolling black pawns

11. ... Bb7 12. Bg2 Qb6 13. exf6 O-O-O 14. O-O ( 14. Qg4!? not scared )14... c5 15. d5 ( 15. dxc5 equalise easily) 15... b4 16. Rb1 Here we are
16. ... Qa6! still threaten to take on c3

17. dxe6 Bxg2 18 e7 Bxf1

Now there's two major option: 19. Qd5 or 19. Kxf1

A. 19. Qd5 is solved

19. ... Bxe7 20. fxe7 Bd3! Shirov's antidote to this whole line 21. exd8=Q+ (21. Ne4 lead to different move order, but white can easily f**k up in some lines) 21. ... Rxd8 22. Ne4 Bxb1

Now it's a perpetual line with Nd6 and a bunch of checks, white needs to peppy or risk losing

B. 19. Kxf1 critical variation

Plan: sac on e7, get rid of defending bishop, target e7 pawn
19. ... Bxe7 20 fxe7 Rdg8 21. Ne4 Rxg5 22. Nxg5 Re8

Now there's Qe2 or Qd5

21. Qe2 Qg6 fork

Now there's two ways to go from here, both lead to pretty dynamic endgames through simplication and I will have to look at some videos but I don't expect to get this far into theory against any opponent for that matter

22. Qe4!? leads to simplification and a dynamic endgame

22. Ne4 leads to forced lines

21. Qd5 Rxe7

The positional option, drawback is black still has the c3+ discovered check idea because there's no Qe2 to block

It they get to this point, black is going for the draw.

White is trying to push h4 and black has to use some tactics to get that simplication and draw.

I will record the lines on my phone to study at pleasure.

Opening Study

Chapter 4 - Semi Slav: Botvinnik Variation (16. Na4)

1. d4 d5 2. c4 c6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Nf3 e6 5. Bg5 dxc4 6. e4 b5 7. e5 h6 8. Bh4 g5
9. Nxg5 hxg5 10. Bxg5 Nbd7 11. g3 Bb7 12. Bg2 Qb6 13. exf6 O-O-O 14. O-O c5 15.
d5 b4 16. Na4 Qb5! Timoscenko/Sveshnikov

Now white can play 17. dxe6 or 17. a3

A. 17. dxe6 can give black the initiative and centralisation possibilities
Qb5 17. dxe6 Bxg2 18. Kxg2 Qc6+ 19. f3 Qxe6 20. Qc2 all forcing
20. ... Ne5 21. Rae1 Rd4 22. h4 Bd6 23. a3 Qd5 24. Qf5+ Kc7 25. Re2 Kc6!
The whole plan is simple, centralise piece and develop, even the king!

B. 17. a3 is the critical line Nb8! aiming to take the d pawn by force!

The Big Three 19th move

A. The historical approach Be3 refuted by Tal with a well timed Ne5

B. Qd4 the Queen Sacrifice Line isn't very sound, just accept the idea with Nc6! Long forcing line follows

C. Qg4!? is the critical line, it probably requires quite abit of memorisation
After 19 ... Bxd5 20 Rfc1 Nc6 21. Bxd5 Rxd5 22. Rxc2 Rxg5 23. Qd4 Kb8 24. Nxc6 Rxg3! 25. fxg3 Qxc6 26. Rd1 Qc7! 27. b3 Kc8 holds everything

But if I get this deep into 19. Qg4 I'm probably facing a GM who found a way to go into this line with an advantage... so I would be screwed anyway :P

Opening Study

Chapter 1 - Semi Slav: Botvinnik Variation Intro

1. d4 d5 2. c4 c6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Nf3 e6 5. Bg5 dxc4
Now if white doesn't play 6. e4 he has less challenging alternatives

6. Ne5?! is no problem, just hold on to the pawn with b5, Bb5, Qd5 against g3

6. g3?! is no problem, similar plan, develop and simplify, while trying to hold on to the pawn

6. e3 b5 a4 Bb4, once again, just hold on the pawn and develop

6. a4 Bb4 7. e4 Qa5 8. Bd2 c5 (9. d5 is meh after exd5 followed by 0-0, Rd8)

A. 9. dxc5 can be neutralised by Qxc5 then giving back c4-c3 at the right time

B. 9. Bxc4 cxd4 10. Nxd4 0-0 There are now three options

- Nb3 is fine, just Qc7 retreat with plan of Nc6-e5 trading off bishop

- Qe2, Nbd7-e5, b6, Rd8 against with plans of trading

- 0-0? leads to a pretty messy line

- Nc2! Nc6 is the critical challenge, we need to play positionally with retreat to Qe7 at the right time, Rd8 etc

The lines in this chapter aren't that theoretical, either we play a pawn up, or play a positional, but theoretically even game

I expect people who aren't trying to play the Botvinnik go into these lines...

I started doing the chapter 6, surprising quiet moves section on Forcing Chess Moves that involve finding creative ideas such as the king walk in the Short-Timman game, https://qph.ec.quoracdn.net/main-qim...t_to_webp=true.

I went back to do some chess tempo tactics and couldn't even see the basic sh*t because I'm stuck in such a mindset... Such as this question, I failed to see a fork down the variation such saves the line: http://chesstempo.com/chess-tactics/154388

Definitely forcing myself to stay home, even through Christmas to work through these things...

Making myself to do tactics over CT ART, chesstempo and Forcing Chess Moves book, until I reach the 1500 puzzle goal in a month.

1. d4 d5 2. c4 c6 3. Nf3 Nf6 4. Nc3 e6 5. e3 Nbd7 6. Bd3 dxc4 7. Bxc4 b5 8. Bd3 Bb7

So in the Wades Variation where he immediately plays 9. e4, then after 9. ... b4 10. Na4 c5 11. e5 Nd5 12 0-0

Instead of playing cxd4 which leads to a complicated line, I play 12. ... h6!? to get a more conservative approach.

Also in the main line 9. 0-0 a6 10. e4 c5 11. d5 c4 12. Bc2 Qc7 followed by moves like dxe6, I bypass all this straight away with 9. ... b4 which leads to the pirc variation which is easier to play and less memorisation. I simply don't have to the time to memorise extremely sharp lines where I can easily get mated and the best thing for me is just a draw at the end.
