Yeah so it's really cool that this movie is moving towards getting made, adding director Edward Zwick, but uh...I'm really not keen on Tobey Maguire playing Bobby Fischer (or anyone else in any movie for that matter).

The kibitzers on Chessgames are naming everyone from Jim Carrey to Johnny Depp.

Who would you have in mind?

My personal pet choice has always been Ryan Gosling.



Oscar-nominated actor, 31-years-old, known for playing intense and troubled young men...and even portrayed an Anti-Semitic Jew already in "The Believer." He also has a New York accent naturally and his voice is a dead-ringer for Fischer's...

Yeah, Gosling would be a pretty good choice. I don't really see any of the other actors named being particularly good for this role.

Maguire is way too small to play Fischer. Fischer was 6'2, Maguire is maybe 5'8 (as low as 5'6 in some sources I've seen). Part of Fischer's auro was his intimidating presence at the board - I don't think someone who is 5'6 will convey it.

Because shorter men have never had intimidating roles in Hollywood through camera work and even shorter opposing actors.

Height can be worked around, but , Tobey just doesn't seem like a good fit look-wise or personality-wise either

after seing the ides of march, i just cant see any other play fisher like ryan gosling would.

he just look like him as well !

Did anybody see this movie?

I didn't even notice it came out last year. (Edit: It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year. But, it's theatrical premier is September 18, 2015).

I find Tobey Maguire more wooden as an actor than the chess pieces he'll be moving. Will definitely watch it if I come across it but I never got the appeal of Tobes. Would have been cool if they got Jesse Eisenberg or someone to play Fisher. Dat curly hair tho I guess.
