White gets 1 move, Black gets 2, White gets 3, Black gets 4, etc.. putting the opponent in check ends your sequence so any checks should be the last move.

yes, iirc KRvK is a draw with black but a win with white.

its very late here so i may not be thinking straight. but how can you mate someone King+Rook vs King?
do these draw situations come up often? i would imagine maybe 1% of the time, but i could be way way off since i never play this.

I don't see how you can force the king out of the centre even if he has to make an odd number of moves, if you already have him trapped on the edge of the board then it should be a win with either colour.

It's possible to draw, but it usually involves both people playing really well or really badly. K+Q wins, K+R is a draw unless there's an instant mate, K+R+anything wins, K+2B wins, K+B+N wins for black, draws for white unless the K is already too trapped, same for K+2N. Anything with a pawn is generally obvious- you can cram it home and win or you can't.

Yeah, one of those little tricks that comes up every once in awhile. I'd seen it when I played my 4, otherwise your 5 would have crushed me.
