Is there still someone playing progressive chess?
Because I want to play it. I was pretty good in the past (best on Atlanticchess, the only site I know of where you could play it but not anymore)

Just saw this old thread for the first time. Man, those first two mates from TomCowley were nasty. Just awesome.

So this thread has a guy who is rated #1 on some website, and another guy who claims to be the best in the world at this game?

All within fewer than 60 posts? That's pretty outrageous. I mean I don't think these guys are as good as they say. I'm 3rd in the world at this game and I think they are FOS.

this should prove whether the "long think, wrong think" theory is true

Even though it's maulaga, I'm finding it hard to believe he wasn't trolling.

Progressive chess has some weird time controls, that's for sure.

Spoiler:
I was pretty terrible at this 5 years ago and time has not improved things. I don't see a mate on move and am pretty sure I get smoked on the next move as I need to play at least one defensive move (otherwise White has mating ideas with, e.g. Bc6 b4-5-6xa7xb8=Q#.

Feels like I should take more than 5 minutes to come up with a reply though :-). Hard to see how I can grab enough material to stave off mate, though, maybe, e.g. c5-4-3xb2xa1=Qxb1 is best but that kingside is very undeveloped :P

Spoiler:
maybe Black can evacuate his K to the centre with something like one of the following
Nb8-d7-b6xa8 and Kd8-Kd7-d6xd5
Nb8-d7-b6xa8, e7-e6xd5, Kd8-d7
Nb8-a6, e7-e6xd5, Bf8-c5, Kd8-e7, Rh8xa8

It's harder to mate the king in the centre, and if White loses his most aggressively placed pawn and bishop it will take a few moves to replace them.

Spoiler:
6. c5 Ke8 f7 Kf7 Nc6 Nb8 (or if that doesn't work concretely, something else along these lines). Turtling up and then trying to gobble up all the material with eight- and ten-movers might be the best plan. It could be surprisingly hard for White to mate even with a huge (temporary) material edge if Black's king gets to the right spot.

Spoiler:
seems crazy but I don't see a mate (assuming the third move there is f6). there are a few ways for White to get a big material advantage and (I think) avoid mate in 9, though.

I thought White could respond by making it impossible for Black to queen in 5 moves, e.g.: d6 dxe7 exf8=B Bg7 Bxf6 b4 bxc5, but this also looks too fancy: Black is just in time to mate with Rf1, Ng3, Nb3. Instead how about b4 bxc5 c6 c7 cxb8Q d6 Qxa7 when Black is not in check but can't usefully queen a pawn. He can underpromote to bishop and recapture on a7, but surely White would have mate in 9...

h4 h5 d6 dxe7 e8=R Re2 Bd5++ and there has to be a material-based squash too.
