Agreed, but his screw ups began when he was obsessing about protecting his h-pawn, with seemingly no realization that he should have been trying to push his a-pawn.

Don't really expect a fight. Topalov only needs a draw with White for clear first, whereas Anand is guaranteed shared second place with Giri and Naka, who could catch up, both playing Black.

That said, he managed to beat Carlsen and STILL finished in last place (and lost a rating point). It's a different point than what you were arguing, but I wouldn't necessarily say Hammer justified his inclusion in the field... but yes he exceeded the extremely low bar you set of 2.5.
