Not sure it's that funny - it's a good way to analyse chess positions outside of an actual game. I agree that using it during a game just doesn't work that great

Always move the King first when you're castling.

that's not overrated but completely necessary. It's the only way to make the castling move unambigious.

Not all candidate moves have to be analyzed, as intuition helps greatly with this. But the idea of finding candidate moves is a great chess axiom. HS poker is different though. In poker you only have 3 actions each turn and your opponent is limited to those same 3 actions all based around the board. In chess, you literally have infinite possibilities and can move up to 16 pieces numerous amounts of squares, and your opponent's reply has a similar number of movements.

as a devotee of alekhine's defence i've always found the advice of 'never move the same piece twice in the opening' to be quite impractical

I am pretty sure that in a tournament against a competent player I would claim the touch-move-rule if he starts with the rook. He should know better.

Not against a kid and not against a beginner, but I would probably point it out then after the game.

This is semi-related to the thread, but one of the most practical pieces of advice I've ever gotten is to not accept draws from higher rated players. They only offer draws in worse positions, so if you get an offer, look hard to see why you're better.

you do realize that touching the king first is in the rulebook, right?

I believe you can say j'adoube.

Here's another one. Always have your horses pointing towards your opponent

hehe castling for controversials: 1) "j'adoube" 2) grab the rook to adjust 3) grab the king to castle while holding the rook and so on

I asked an FM on ICC a few years ago what his advice would be (after my beating him in a 1 0 game and him being very complimentary) and he told me that I should always try to castle within the first five (!) moves. Without always playing the King's Indian Attack, Nimzo-Indian, etc. I don't really see how this is possible; perhaps he was just trying to give me level-appropriate advice (I was about 1800 at the time), but I always thought this was the worst, if not the weirdest, idea someone has tried to teach me about chess.

However, he did give me a piece of really good advice too - to read Bronstein's book about the 1953 Zurich Interzonal (?). Awesome book that I think helped my chess thinking a lot.
The advice he gave about castling was obviously about 1 0 only games and I think its pretty good advice too.
