Round 3 and another 1900 player. I decided to use the same line as in my club championship playoff, but with Black this time.

Tomorrow a 7 hour train journey, so lots of time to analyse stuff! The tournament is in a casino, but I'll try to stay away from the poker tables. Apparently there is a tournament on the day after the chess finishes, its 120+30 euro (lol rake) but French live players are surely horrendous.

Really enjoyed that game, it was a very instructive/thematic KID attack for black. Well played, and nice use of tactics as well.

I don't know the theory here, but is 6. Qh5+ no good? Both players allowed it for a couple of moves, so it must not be a good idea but I don't know why.

Qh5+ is possible, but you probably want to have a concrete follow up- otherwise you are helping me develop with Nf6. Of course my king is worse on f8, but is it worth 2 moves?

Back on track after that loss, 3 wins in a row. The first 2 were lower rated, but beat a 2350 IM today. Tomorrow is another IM, 2470 this time.

You gotta show us a game where you beat an IM

Can't believe I missed 22.Bd6, I was down to increment already but that is bad time management and I should still be spotting it in that time. Somehow I still managed to get the win.

Drew today, 2350 tomorrow as White, so a win would set up a match for one of the top places in the final round.

lol 1.c4 d5. Good job switching to 1.e4 mode after his opening silliness. Was the IM Shirazi

1... d5 is not a big deal, what's worth laughing at are 2... Qxd5 and 3... Qa5? (known as the Malvinas Variation of the Anglo-Scandi) and especially his delay with castling in the open position.

Both 2... Nf6 (the Schulz Gambit) and 2... Qxd5 3. Nc3 Qd6!? are quite playable.

The Anglo-Scandi so new that much more games are found on FICSgames than even Chessbase; at the 2000-2200 level on FICS (as well as in the whole DB), 1... d5 constitutes 3-4% of all responses to 1. c4. I guess that's because a few computers and regs play it every time. The Qd6 line (apparently ported from the usual Scandi) even scores better for Black than for White for some reason.

Yeah not really sure why he went 1...d5, I'm surprised that opening even has a name

I've decided to run a couple of 2 | 12 Stockfish vs Stockfish games in the Qd6 line

Game 1 (4. Nf3) (Black sacked a pawn to get an opposite colour bishops endgame )

Game 2 (4. d4) (Black was playing on increments by move 20 already, and the pair of bishops, the open c-file and the vulnerable queen decided the game)

It's not a bad opening perhaps, but it seems kind of pointless. It's not like learning something offbeat like the Chigorin or Albin Countergambit, where there are enough traps that you can trick someone if he's not careful. You just put your Queen on a silly square and give up central control for no particular reason. Plus, White can just play 2.d4 and go into a Queen's gambit, so it's not even a guaranteed way to get out of book.

Board 1 in the final round

Not entirely sure about strategy going into the game. I believe prizes are not shared so a draw would guarantee him first. However my tiebreak isn't good so I really need a win for a decent prize. It's hard to tell what he will do, draw offers aren't allowed before move 30 either.

Lost it unfortunately

I didn't play very well this tourney, but still gained around 15 points so happy enough considering it was meant to be a warm-up for the Club Cup.

Apologies for the lack of updates, still been doing a lot of work since I got back from France, mainly on the workbooks. Just started Endgame Play (funny aside: a random girl on the train pointed out that most of the titles in this series are sexual innuendos viz: Positional Play, Attack and Defence )
here is a puzzle I got wrong:

Spoiler:
Another case of me cutting variations off too soon
1.Ke6! Nd3 2.Bd4!! (I was mostly trying to make 2.Be3 work, but Black is in time with his queenside pawns to draw) Nxf4+ 3.Kxf5 Nxh3 I stopped here but after 4.Kg4 the knight is trapped

This game has taken me for ever to analyse...and I've kind of skimmed over the endgame. Not checked the variations with a computer yet so expect many errors (long analysis wrong analysis)
