Black can untangle in a more forcing way with 1..Be4! . If 2.fxe4 then 2..Rg5, or any other attempt by White is followed by ..g5 unleashing the pieces on f8 and g8. My computer indicates that White can't mate, he does of course have a pretty easy perpetual.

The computer likes 1..Be8 initially because it doesn't see the perpetual setups but I think there is always perpetual (White forces Kxa2 and then puts a rook on d8 and checks with the other rook)
