In the interest of transparency, I should say that I'm no authority on what it takes to be a good chess player. I topped out around 2000 and am probably a bit worse than that due to rust. I'm basing my views on my own games and my experiences analyzing with and listening to the advice of strong players.

For the record: I asked Svidler in one of his banter blitz sessions on chess24 about freerolling in chess and he said that it's a valid strategy and that it does work.
