Yesterday our chess club was visited by a deafblind man. I played some games with him and he did well for someone who never played for a real chess club (he visits the chess section of a sport club for deaf people but apparently crushed everyone there). Of course communication is hard, his friend translated for us. He used a sort of alphabet which uses the hand like a touchpad. For chess, a standard tactile chess board (with holes to arrest the pieces, and little nailtips on top of the black pieces) and a clock without glasses were used. To indicate that i made my move, i pushed the chessboard gently towards him, stirring his arm which he held alongside the board.
I wasn't unfamiliar with playing disabled people, i played both the best blind player at the time (Dieter Bischoff) and the best deaf player (IM Sergei Salov) in germany in tournament games (and won both games), maybe now i beat the best deafblind player too
. Definitely an experience.
In the second game, i managed a nice finish (although it's not really hard to find even with only 2 minutes on the clock):
