yeah, I would definitely have considered this if it was early next year or something, would like to visit Lithuania some time

lol at Lithuania being a "chess province", Ireland has about twice the population (?) and about 6 players > 2300. Even in America, how many tournaments a year attract 30 GMs?

last night i beat someone 150 points higher than me...and then he followed me from table to table for the next hour. i am not even exaggerating. he kept typing in all caps "YOU LUCKY" with some not so nice words at the end. haha people are ****ing nuts.

but i did get lucky...(not a weird sexual reference)

Playing in a local 7round classical tourney, just won my first round game.

It is Mikenas memorial tomorrow after all so I decided to play a game in his spirit:

i was down to my King last night against a guy who had a bishop and a knight, but he couldn't figure out how to mate me (he was rated ~1300). on the 90th move he offered a draw. i havent been in that situation before...it must be a lot harder than it looks.

Its not hard if you bother to learn it but many people don't. Even many 2000ish rated players can't mate with B+N

There have been GMs unable to mate with B+N!

It all depends on the time that's left. 10 minutes or more => no problem. But with the flag about to fall it becomes difficult.

i think with 5 min left nearly every GM would win. Epishin had ~2 without increment IIRC.

to see what technique the best guys have in these endings, look at Caruana-Ponomariov from the World Blitz Championship. He defends the infamous R vs R+B almost effortlessly at a rate of 2 sec / move.

Fortunately, DONCASTI was quite low on time and he blundered in time pressure some moves later.

Lesson from this - if there is an easy win, GO FOR IT, instead of looking for some flashy lines

wtf is Qh7? that's an immediate and crushing loss for you. just Rh4 and win shortly.

well i mean Kxf6 isn't the only flaw in your line. there's absolutely nothing wrong with black playing Kg8 instead of Kg6 and none of the tactics that you thought you had even come into effect

He was actually trying to mate his opponent in the wrong color corner! He made moves explicitly prohibiting his opponent from going into the right corner. That's something that shows he was just completely clueless about even the general idea regardless of his time left.

Do you dispute that he forced his opponent into the wrong corner or that he then tried to invent some sort of mating net in the wrong corner?
