Lichess has started hosting private coaching ads, and there are many familiar Youtubers on that list:

CM Tryfon Gavriel (Kingscrusher)
IM John Bartholomew (Fins)
IM Christof Sielecki (Chessexplained)
GM Tal Baron

which means that they've switched to using the lichess study platform for their lessons

It looks like lichess doesn't let bad coaches onto the list (especially because it's a non-commercial site and has no vested interest in letting randoms place ads), so the inclusion there is a kind of a seal of approval.

Thanks to NL Loki for drawing my attention to this list in his log (and congrats on the invitation)

Apropos of nothing, I'm a 1450-1700 bullet/blitz player (play mostly 3/2 time control on chess.com), and I recently discovered the Crazyhouse variant they added and, like, wtf, it's the greatest thing ever? I know they didn't come up with it but I've never played it before. It's like going from limit holdem to PLO with 12 cards in your hand.

Seriously, how is this not the future of chess? Little to no opening theory, much harder for computers to brute force, many chances for creativity.

If you think there's no opening theory in crazyhouse, I have an unpleasant surprise for you. The game probably won't be the future simply because I suspect white's advantage is just too large.

But comparatively speaking to opening theory in regular chess, isn't there very little crazyhouse opening theory? Not only because a lot less computing time and fewer people have worked on it, but because of how difficult it is to analyze positions with a lot of exchanged pieces? Like for any openings that involve traded pieces, wouldn't there be next to no lines of theory that are 10+ moves deep?

I like the game so much atm that if white's advantage is too much I'd be in favor of some gimmick to make it fairer for black.

I have played a few 1800-1900 players now who have ravaged me with minor piece mating patterns, feels kinda like being beaten by somebody with good opening theory prep, I guess it's more like "tactical theory".

Nepomniachtchi just won the Tal Memorial with 6/9! Awesome achievement.

After winning Danzhou (6/9) in July and scoring 8/10 in the Olympiad, he's now 2766.8 on the live ratings, same as Giri.

Just in case anyone cares, I have +2 -4 so far in IOM. Today playing a 2350 15 year old who beat Hao Wang earlier in the event. RIP GG

Well, his brother is pretty sick already, I am sure this guy will be an IM very soon and probably a GM too.

He certainly gave me a beating. I almost escaped with a draw, but it was mostly because his position was so winning that he stopped paying attention and blundered. Proper follow up and I think I would have gotten it.

vv LC post-

I installed Arena w/Stockfish and it seems advanced for me. On my phone I have the Smallfish App and it's very simple to use in identifying best move possibility. Is there something comparable that I can use on the PC? Thanks.

You might want try the ChessBase reader, which is free and allows you to load multiple engines for analysis. It is much more user-friendly than Arena.

Had a sweet revenge vs IM Elda64, who is ~2800 in blitz on lichess and is crushing me lifetime:

many ways to win, all of them pretty beautiful, so find the one that is most pleasing to you

Congrats on the sweet revenge!

My solution of the puzzle:
Spoiler:
1. Qxh6! Nxh6 2. Rxg7+ Kh8 3. Rxf7+ Kg8 4. Rg7+ Kh8 5. Re7+* Rf6 6. Bxf6#

* 5. Rxd7+ is possible but not trollish.

As always in chess, once you told that there's a crushing move in the position, it took me only 15 or so seconds to persuade myself to start calculating what would happen after Qxh6. In real blitz, though, with the clock ticking, I'd likely fail to feel that there's some killer move in the position.

1. Qxh6 is a line that I chose, because it seemed very picturesque to me, but holy ****, how didn't I think of Re7 instead of Rd7!! Woulda made it even sweeter In the game, I saw Rxg7 mates faster immediatelly after I played Qxh6, so I guess it counts as not seeing it I started calculating from Qxf5, saw it does not work and then saw Qxh6, when I found such a nice double windmill mate I didn't look any further

Spoiler:
Oops, I was wrong - 1. Rxg7+ doesn't mate faster because Black has 1... Nxg7 2. Qxh6 Qg4, threatening mate on g2. Black still loses after 3. f3 Qg3 4. Ng5, 3... Bxf3 4. Rxf3 or 3... Qd4+ 4. Bxd4 cxd4, but he loses slower in the latter two cases.

Spoiler:
No, Rxg7+ does mate faster - just not after 2. Qxh6

Sure, disappear and come back only to show us crushing victories with multiple ways to win. Looks like someone has been reading Loki's log .

Anyway, 1. Qxh6 is brilliant too, congrats on being able to spot it!

Is there any online chess platform that allows its members to run their own tournaments? I.e. someone wants to have a 10 player tournament between friends, but don't wanna do it by hand, they just wanna log on to a software and have the software do the pairings, provide tables, etc.

Doable?

looks like you can do it on lichess! Another reason to love this site.

Yeah, I was going to say lichess even though I have no idea if such a thing is possible. Just, you know, when in doubt lichess probably can do it, :P.

nothing more satisfying than blundering to lose a game while your opponent talks trash, then rematching and winning, rematching and winning again (both times easily).

You can't actually do it on lichess unless you actually want their terrible arena tournaments instead of a normal swiss.

To BJJ:

http://chess-results.com/tnr243136.a...&wi=821&snr=79

Kid is still 11...

The battle between him and Praggnanandhaa, who is even younger and up to ~2450 and full IM already, is going to very interesting. There are also others in that age group that are at a bit lower, but still extremely impressive level, like Keymer, Sindarov, Bjerre, and I am sure I am forgetting someone.
