BTW, if anybody here lives in the midwest USA, you might consider playing in the Saint Louis Open on April 10th and 11th. I think I've mentioned this before, but the club there is ridiculously nice (the benefactor is a wealthy banker) and the current probable (titled) players for this tournament are:

And soon after I guess you're on the chess equivalent of auto pilot. Whereas blitz games are pretty deliberate. You have to actually seek them out, wait for an opponent and you always know it's a real person you're facing since you can always rematch, etc.

Can you elaborate on this? I don't know what you mean by energy. I don't see how a 5 0 blitz game would feel any different than 5-minute pool game, aside from the fact that ratings are scaled differently.

3 0 blitz is very popular and a very different game from 5 minute. I think the 5 minute pool on ICC is far tougher than the ordinary blitz games. i see inflated blitz ratings on mediocre players a lot- that's pretty much impossible in the 5 minute pool; since you can't choose your opponents your rating will average out over time.

It's pretty obvious 3 0 and 5-minute are far different games. However that's not what I was asking for him to clarify.

I find in the 5-min pool you'll run into a ton of guys are on some serious auto-pilot. They're just going through the motions and playing 'solid' without really thinking. And they select opening 'systems' to support that style of play. Such a huge chunk of the 5-min pool is Benko as black, London/KIA or some other 'system' as white.

In my limited recent experience in blitz matches people just seem to be putting more effort into trying to play good chess in the games.

They have a Roomba that runs amok? No, they have 10-15 DGT boards inlaid in wooden chess tables that automatically transmit moves. A couple dozen large LCD/plasma TV's are hung around the club that can display the ongoing games, display round pairings, show chess videos when tournaments aren't going, etc. I think there's some sort of projector in the classroom in the basement.
