In my opinion (to be taken with a grain of salt since I haven't analysed the game deeply) this:

dubious moves: 4...Qxd5, 11...Nbd7

bad moves: 7...Bd6, 16...Bc5, 21...Bf5, 27...Bd4

Try find with your own analysis why these moves are dubious/bad, I think it will be more beneficial than me just telling you why.

16... Rh8 is much stronger and causes all sorts of problems, followed by bc5+

21...Bf5
21...rxf4, he cant take because of bd6

27...Bd4
27...Qe3 looks like it keeps the pressure on h6 and also threatens the night on c3, but this one is less clear
This?

also 23...Qb6 doesn't look good, why not just Rxc4?

and 25...Nf2+ is a mistake because you have instead Rxh3+ which turns out to be crushing (I cheated and looked at the computer analysis, but it isn't too difficult to calculate at the board either imo)

even if one of these isn't actually winning, you still have to evaluate it over the board. You can't say "eventually I'll play chess well" and expect that eventually you can see through all these tactical sequences without making any effort to actually calculate them.

I was just thinking today that the evolution of chess style and sophistication really matches the way I would teach a beginner.

Morphy + romantics (classic center, initiative, development, TACTICS!) -> Steinitz (beginnings of more pure positional play ) -> Nimzo et al (central control with pieces in the opening, more positional play) -> Botvinnik, Fischer, Kasparov (concrete analysis master of all)

Probably obvious to anyone who has considered it before but I still thought it was somewhat interesting.

Ugh, was just thinking that I hadn't seen Dire post in quite a while. Checked and he perma self-banned a few weeks ago. Really sucks to lose such a high quality content poster.

Why did he perma self-ban?

based on some of his posts before that it looks like he was on forum tilt

I just realized that I get much much much more tilted after playing online chess than after playing online poker.

I am just completely STEAMING after playing like 10 games on Playchess lol.

For a while I was getting tilted playing 5 0. My solution was to play 5 2 instead. Getting timed out when I have a winning position because I can't move the pieces fast enough is the only thing that seriously tilts me.

11...Nbd7 is a strange move as it seems very natural to play Nc6 and Rad8 pressurising the d4 pawn with Bxf3 ideas as well.

About Dire, I agree, a big loss.

This is my biggest problem too. I send out invites at 5 5 or 5 3. Sometimes I accept a challenge at 3 1 or 3 0 and typically lose on time in a winning game because I can't move as fast on my PC as I could OTB. When I try, many mouse slips occur. Maybe I'm just old.

I enjoy a game when I get outplayed and love to analyze it. Losing on time because of PC/mouse limitations is irritating.

I'm the complete opposite, I normally play 1 0 when I play, and there's no way I can play that live. fwiw I don't get many mouse slips and my mouse is ****.

I think I can play way faster OTB, but it might just be that all my opps play slower

I've long had an interest in chess, but just got back from my first ever OTB tournament. I finished in a tie for 4th, half-point behind 1st (3.0/5, 3 guys had 3.5/5).

Hey whats up my first post in the chess forum. Anyway trying to learn chess so I joined fics. I am rocking the 1200 bracket at 50 games or so, trying to learn and practice my openings. Is smack talking common on the chess sites? I have had several people talk **** to me. I dunno I just thought it odd **** talking a chess game. Especially when i know they can see how new I am.

Oh yea I play under the name irscott if anyone wants to play and give me some tips.

This maybe belongs in the 'chess interactions with randoms' thread but this sort of thing is really common. People frequently tell me how they took second in their first tournament four years ago. They never realize that's a pretty meaningless statement without qualification for tournament type, section, etc, etc. [/rant]

Regardless, good job, Gorgonian!

Hey guys, about a year ago someone posted a download link to what I think was a chess openings tactics pgn which could be opened in rybka and worked just like the tactics problems on chesstempo. There was like 1000 tactics or something in the pgn.

Does anybody here have the link? I think it was called something like chess opening tactics but cant say for sure.

It was an open tournament in Arkansas. I didn't mean to try to make it a terribly meaningful statement. That's why I put it in the low content thread. Just wanted to say something about it here since it was my first and I had fun. Take no more from it than that.

it's possible I would never have become a poker player without Gorgonian. You've got a lot to answer for.

This is a game I just finished. Played the Sicilian Defence for the first time (only playing for about a month). I'm looking for improvement, so tips are much appreciated. BTW, even though I'm a noob, I think I'm a bit better than my opponent, probably winning 2/3 games.

EDIT: I'm black obv
