The line works just as well against Qd6 since he can easily take the pawn from there too.

In my database though Qa5 is played about 4 times more often than Qd6.

According to my opening database, Qa5 is about five times more common than Qd6, overall. However, in those (relatively rare) set of games where masters choose to play the Scandinavian, Qd6 is almost as common as Qa5 (though the latter is still the main line).

I've played b4 occasionally in lightning games, just with the idea to play bxa5 after they premove something else. Never saw this trick before, though.

I finally had to +noplay all the computers on ICC because of that.

It'd be 2 a.m., I'm dead tired, but I'm close to a new rating high in standard, so I just fire up a game with a computer that I "know" I can beat to vulture 8-10 points at a time and try to rip through a couple of games really quick.

Inevitably, I'm so tired I make a dumb mistake and lose a game. Now I'm down 20 points. I have to win two more to make that up!

I keep chasing my losses for an hour or two, each game making more more tired and more tilted and thus more likely to lose than the game before.

Next thing you know, I've got a 200-point trough to climb out of.

Thanks for posting the game.

But what if Black just plays 6.. Nf6 ?

Then isn't White just down a pawn?

I do suppose 6..c6 is sort of "natural" for Black to play if he is not aware of the trap.

Nf6 is obviously also bad for black:

I know this is BBV and all, but 4. b4 is just bad against the Qa5 Scandinavian. You give up a pawn for very unclear compensation. The main line with 0-0-0, Nf3-e5 and g4, f4 on the other hand is just so strong and basically plays itself.

Seriously annoying game not only because I made several unsound moves but because I couldnt be bothered to just check the guy for 50 moves to force the draw (which he wouldnt accept). All this after clawing back what should be a completely lost game.

I would blame it on the alcohol but tbh it's standard. I might just force myself to play longer games where I actually think and dont just act like a moron.

you know you can claim a draw when he repeats the position for a third time? I'd be shocked if chess.com didn't allow you to do that, it's a pretty major rule.

He didnt repeat the position three times. He had two squares he could move his king to.
