Re: *** Chess BBV ***

OT, not wanting to search for a thread on chess books:

I'd say I'm roughly a 1900-2000 strength player, maybe a bit higher, but around there. I've recently got back into OTB playing (which I've been meaning to do for several years now, but didn't) and my game isn't that sharp, especially with respect to openings.

Any suggestions on where to start with some literature on openings? I've never really had formal education wrt chess, but I'm definitely not on a beginners level. I intend to go get a copy of MCO or something like that, but is there anything else I should bother with?

Mastering the Chess Openings (Volume 1, 2, and 3) are pretty good.
by John Watson

Check out Amazon reviews and see which one fits in best with your repertoire (If you play 1. e4 or 1. d4) or if you want get all of them for a good overview.

MCO seems like a fine pick up.

What exactly are you looking for? Something to help you determine your repertoire? General ideas in the openings? Detailed coverage of specific openings?

Hijak - I recently read and skimmed through How to Beat the French by Andreas Tzermiadianos and that is an awfully good opening book. It's a repertoire for white vs the French using the Tarrasch with great explanations of pawn structures, middlegame plans and endgames.

Really, all of the above, but most importantly in bold.

I've got older copies of NCO/MCO/UCO etc. and they're great for line memorization and such. But I'm looking for something a little more than just spewing every known variation of every major opening. Something that will help me to decide on something I like and that fits the style I like to play, and help me to stop playing dumb openings that I've learned from playing too much bullet.

Playchess has a couple fun tricks

1. request win on disconnect - not so bad until you're winning and your opponent starts doing it every 20-30 sec. hoping to get a brief sec where you might have lost inet response

2. A couple times I've beaten folks from behind or with a nasty trick and they go "*bless you" with that astrisk and I can't help but think it's supposed to mean somthing else - LOL

the request for a draw is loud and annoying - - but not a biggie

Re: *** Chess BBV ***

Am going to post a chess brag for myself.

Brag: I finished with a perfect 5/5 in an U2200 event recently -- my first live chess in a couple of years -- getting a pretty absurd performance rating and a boatload of rating points in the process. Due to a combination of byes, draws, and the people I played beating other contenders, I actually locked the event up after four rounds, which was pretty hilarious to me.

Beat: Obviously I'm an U2200 player...though not for too much longer, I hope!

Variance: Definitely am going to need a new defense to 1.d4 than the random nonsense I currently play...I find a combination of "playing against one's own repertoire" syndrome and not liking tactical messes too much is making that harder than it should be to just settle on something. Probably some flavor of the QGD playable against a Nf3 move order that still puts some early pressure on White is in the cards, and I am definitely taking suggestions!

I second the motion - I really am starting to despise the KID vs 1. d4 - seems like too many d4 players have my number with it -

Congratulations!! 5/5 in a U2200 section is really impressive.

Stuff I like:

1. Semi-slav b/c you can play it vs 1. d4, c4 or Nf3, it's aggressive, the Noteboom variation is super simple to play.
2. Tarrasch defense is also playable vs d4, c4 or Nf3, you get somewhat open positions, quick development and decent space.

I really like the nimzo/QID against d4. I'm actually liking the QID more and more. It has a drawish rep yet you can play some very sharp lines in it, particularly when you keep the light bishops on board.

Re: *** Chess BBV ***

Brag: Beat a 2170 rated opponent today (OTB, 2h/40 + 1h/rest).
Beat: The game was a comedy of errors.
Variance: My team won 4,5-3,5.

I also played a nice move:

42. Nd4! =

Quite amusingly, the game ended like this (don't know if this is a brag, a beat or variance):

42. Nd4 Bxd6 43. N8e6 Bf7??? 44. Qh8+ 1-0

Thanks, obviously I had some help from my opponents :-)

The semi-slav is actually at the top of the list, but I imagine that White never really lets Black play a Noteboom, no? Trying to pick my way through the Marshall lines is my first task I guess -- your game in that line was great to play through...those positions are so chaotic and must be hard to play for both sides.

I'm curious what lines you play, especially in the QID, although I imagine you play many lines that I lack to intestinal fortitude to play. I'd probably find a "what is your opening repertoire" thread interesting...
