Just scored my first win over an FM in 5-min (I very recently joined ICC so that I could get some stronger competition). I sort of picture him as a 67 year old guy who made FM in 1974, because his rating seems low for a titled player. Regardless, it felt good!

Nice job!

Edit - and 20xx isn't super low for an FM in the 5 minute pool. I've played IM's rated under 2000 there.

Yeah, I know that the 5-min ratings are super low in general. I finally got above 1900 and I'm afraid to play because I'm not sure I can maintain it...and I'm 2000 USCF! I see a lot of 2200-2300 GMs, too.

I honestly don't know either. Maybe he forgot he can castle :P

not being stupid, it actually does not win a rook due to 30.Qxc6+ Re6 but 31.Qc8 after that looks really awkward for Black

I don't really remember, but I have two theories. One is that my king isn't any safer on g1 than on f2, and there are likely going to be some exchanges on the d-file soon, so it's good to have my king one step closer to centralizing in the endgame.

The other explanation is that I forgot I could still castle.

I officially can't play standard chess online. I can beat 99% of the guys I end up playing with 1:50 time odds, so I'm left there twiddling my thumbs for 98% of the game and then life tilting after hanging my queen against 1300ish quality players giving the position literally 0 thought which is enough 99% of the time.

How to tell that your opponent is a book monkey who sucks at chess:

1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 Bg7 4. e4 d6 5. Nf3 O-O 6. Be2 Na6 7. O-O e5 8. dxe5
dxe5 9. Qxd8 Rxd8 10. Nxe5 Re8??????????????????????????????????????? 11. f4 Nxe4 12. Nxe4 f6 13. Nxf6+ Bxf6 14. Bf3
Bxe5 15. fxe5 Rxe5 16. Bd5+ Be6 17. Bxb7 1-0

It just cracks me up when some 1900 says they want to get into some trendy topical opening then blunders in 3 moves when you intentionally play a very mediocre non book line. And it happens over and over and over and over.

I think it's a justified rant. That's not just some random game.

.. e5 in the king's indian is a tactical move. e5 is ostensibly just hanging a pawn. For somebody to have played e5 hundreds of times but have no clue or understanding about the basis behind the move other than durrrrr it's theory is just pitiful.

Who said he did that?

Those moves are pretty easy to remember.

I'm sure he plays chess for other reasons than "memorizing openings". Maybe he doesn't know many openings at all.

Maybe you're all P.O.'d about something else.

Just played HU for rollz with some random jackass on ICC. Okay, not really for rolls, but for a finger note addition. I was tired and slightly drunk, just screwing around playing 5-minute and some random decided to talk ****. Here's the chat leading up to and during the match. Cussing is involved, so I'm putting it in a spoiler box. I started out 2.5 out of 3 and then opened FT and only went 1/3 eeking out a 3.5/2.5 victory. The games were horrible, but pounding some jackass felt good.

Edit - the best part was that my blitz rating is provisional cause I never play anything but 5-minute and villain was too low rated to play me in rated games. Lol.
