The collaboration, which until now has been kept secret, has been under way for six months, confirms Magnus Carlsen himself. He will not reveal what the training program costs, but confirms that it is expensive.

Wow. I thought this may have been more of Kasparov deciding on a final apprentice rather than them paying him. I wonder how much a year of Kasparov costs.

It is estimated that Kasparov earned over 30 million US$ or 23 million Euros during his chess career, and has a staff of twenty people working for him, including chauffeurs, bodyguards and cooks.
and he has this non-baller grind setup:

I love how Kasparov doesn't even have a baller flatscreen TV.

Just some normal run of the mill piece of crap, and he's worth what somewhere between 30-50 million?

lol @ how far Magnus has the board away from him, so he has to super stretch to reach it.

I really wonder how much Kasparov charges for a standard day of training... One can only wonder.

Maybe $5,000 a day? or $1,000/hr ?

What do you guys think?

It's his holiday domicile in croatia, i doubt he wants to stuff that with high-valued electronics and leave it alone 3/4 of the year.

To have training sessions with a great player like Kasparov should be invaluable to a guy like Magnus Carlsen. He will get lessons in far more than just chess knowledge. How to train, psychology, exercise. Maybe even some unused opening weapens.

Great avatar Noir !

QFT

I'd imagine the unused openings weapons and Kasparov's in depth coverage of systems would alone be worth the price of $$$ training

Is there a website where we can bet that Magnus will become world # 1 within a certain time period?

One interview with Carlsen (possibly quoted in the link in OP) had him explaining that many openings being used today were shaped by Kasparov. So even without getting new opening secrets, just being able to learn the hidden details in currently used openings from their creator is invaluable. Or something like that.

It seems to me that Kasparov retired when he realized that his advantage in the openings was gone. It is very difficult to outprepare Anand, Topalov and Kramnik these days. The advantage of Carlsen is that he will still be rather young, when those others guys become too old to stand the stress. His main opponent at that time will be Grishuk.

Actually I read that when Kasparov retired he had an entire database of unused openings novelties/improvements in systems that he never got to employ. His team + computers had been working on them for a long time.

He retired when he realized he'd rather get into politics than try to beat the Berlin Wall over and over.

Lol, when I first saw that picture I thought it was a photoshop of some 2+2er in a wife-beater 12 tabling with a random nerd playing chess in the background. I can't believe that picture is real.

This is probably a "fake" setup that Kasparov and Carlsen did to leak out a photo.

After the cameras were put away I'm sure they moved back into Batman's

I mean Kasparov's lair where Robin, I mean Carlsen gets trained in a baller setup.

Those pictures are awesome. I really want to know how much Kasparov is charging for this. Also, did anyone seriously doubt that Carlsen would become #1 - at least for some portion of his career - regardless of who his coach is?

Yeah I really wanna know the cost of this too....

Def. swingdoc, now all the other top players are crapping themselves since Kaspy-Carlsen alliance has been announced.

I'm sure they only decided to make it public to make everyone FEAR Carlsen now.

Let's try to think of a new nickname for Carlsen since Kasparov trains him now..

How about: Carlsenarov

Agree, there's no way Kasparov doesn't have a 'boiler room' with dozens of computer/monitors/etc. That's where the real work is going down

I have seen Kasparov live at a simul once and he is indeed surprisingly small. On second thought, maybe he just seemed so small to me because I had imagined that such a great player must also be very large...

This happened to me when I first saw Kamsky irl. I think I expected him to be about 9 feet tall, because he's not actually a short man.

yah, well, you can't have all that crap in your own room due to heat and noise - probably over in the spare bedroom

always wanted to get a half dozen pc's running Rybka and smoking the playchess computer competition
