Friendly match between Aronian and Nakamura starting today in about an hour.

You can follow live here.

They will play 4 classical games (worth 4 points each) and 16 blitz games (1 point each).

Winner gets $60k, loser $40k.

Should keep us entartained while we're not following Carlsen-Anand.

I didn't realize the blitz match was part of it. They're playing all 16 blitz games in a single day, starting a game every 15 minutes! That should be pretty crazy entertaining!

Love it when I don't have to get up at 4am to watch a chess tournament

I'm neutral, but I was glad to see the smile with which Levon took his tough defeat and started discussing variations. Had Hikaru been the loser, we'd be likely to see a less friendly reaction - compare it with how Hikaru blew up when CE crushed him on ICC and started analysing the game Such an emotional reaction would look OK in a poker tourney, but not a chess match.

Nakamura with a strange blunder in yesterday's game, 38...a5. He was under significant time pressure, but this makes the decision all the more strange.

Neither player seems to be really on his game.

The only complaint I have about the coverage is that maybe they could mix up that break music a bit. It's like a form of slow torture.

Gonna try to take my suddenly chess-obsessed son to the blitz games on Tuesday.

The embedded broadcast at the official site is broken for some reason (shows yesterday's record), watch the official live coverage here instead.

I do really like the idea of putting up puzzles, agree about the music.

They tied. 1 win each and 2 draws.

Looks like Naka is just too good at blitz.

Awesome job by Aronian to hold the draw in game 8. Yeah it was theoretically drawn, but to hold RPP vs. R while playing in the increment? Impressive, and keeps him marginally alive in the match.

Naka's expected score, per their blitz ELO ratings going into the match, is about 58%. Through the first eight games he exceeded expectation by almost a full point in going 5.5/8, and gained 17.2 blitz rating points, but remains 24.8 points behind Magnus for the #1 world blitz ranking.

Looks like he needs 6/8 in the second half to pass Carlsen.

Pretty cool to see him defend that position.

I really like videos in which GMs blitz out these theoretical endgames.

BJJ's comment on Hikaru's match win in the live stream chat: 'Shows how much the red bull helped him vs. aronian's water'

Respect goes to both GMs for will to create complications and the defensive skills that were helping solve them.

It's great that the match involved so much play instead of Naka just making simple moves and crushing on time.

What standard do the top 3 min + 2 second players play at? I.E if you analysed their games for good play and errors, what ELO would it correspond to with normal time controls?
