That queen sac is a rare case of Karjakin getting creative.

This excludes games from 2006 for instance, when Topalov dominated the competition in "advanced chess".

To make a rather sophisticated prediction you also need to handicap opening repertoires. Typical 1.e4 players like Caruana and Anand have a much more tougher time because of the Berlin than 1.d4 guys like Aronian and Giri.

It appears Caruana reads twoplustwo and took your sage advice, as he played 1. d4 today.

Well done sir.

Svidler is just in terrible form.

Check out the press conference. Anand's wig never became so apparent

Oh yeah, wtg Caruana! He almost won it too.

To make it clear, today Svidler lost to prep. He basically made 2 moves of his own and it was over. That is what happens these days when you don't play the Berlin but try to make your draw in the Marshall.

I was kinda under the impression that the Be3, Qd3, Nd2 line in the Marshall was not doing so hot for black?

You should post a recommendation here for Svidler in the chance he reads 2p2.

Worked for Caruana!

Naka touched his king and had to move it... at least that's what they're saying on chess24

Yep, you could clearly see it on the stream.

It looks like Naka is trying his best to copy Ivanchuk's performance from a couple of years ago where Chucky lost to nearly everyone, only to beat Carlsen to make it interesting.

Lol did he really try to J'adoube after grabbing it like that? Looks like that could be what he was saying.

I really hate all the players who do that without saying anything. You touch it, you move it. I can already imagine some top player doing this **** on me, and believe me the arbiter will be running to my board. I have been too bored to do that with the weaklings.

Gotta love Aronian's grin as he shakes his head. Even without the audio, it's so clear that he's saying something like "C'mon, man. Don't try that. There's no way in hell I'm letting you get away with that."

What's to prevent a player from saying j'adoube every time they reach for a piece to initiate a move? Constantly saying j'adoube would appear to be a dominant strategy, unless there's a rule against it. Of course this assumes the player in question doesn't mind being universally hated.

What competitive advantage is gained by constantly touching pieces one has no intention of moving?

I didn't mean saying j'adoube and then randomly touching pieces, as amusing as that might be. But what I was referring to is a player making j'adoube the first step in their process of making a move. They intend to move the piece, but every once in a while they might have second thoughts at the moment they touch it, and if they said j'adoube, they're covered. Or if they want to try some gamesmanship stuff where they say j'adoube (as always) then touch a piece to see how the opponent reacts before deciding whether to make the move or not.

I'm guessing the referee would put a stop to this pretty quickly, but was wondering if there was any rule against j'adoube abuse.

There actually is a rule specifically for that, believe it or not.
