Here we go! Unlike in previous years, we won't be seeing mini matches to determine the challenger. Rather, this Candidates Tournament will be a double round-robin over 14 games, with four rest days after Games 3, 6, 9, and 12.

It starts today!

Here are the first round pairings:

Coverage will be provided by the official site (to which I will not link because they require sign ups, and **** them for that), and even though they threatened legal action to anyone relaying the moves and talking about them publicly (LOL), at the very least Chess24 have already announced that they will be covering the event live, HERE.

Let Us Candidates!

Man, it would be awesome if Hikaru or Fabiano shipped this. Let's go. USA#1.

The best chess player will win this event.

Disclaimer: by best chess player I mean the person who plays the best chess in this event.

Ugh, the official broadcast is awful.
A half hour of random chit chat and a then a break for the ads, without any commentary on the moves.

At least chess24 is live now, even if there's no Jan it sure beats that official abomination.

Wide open. I went for Giri mainly because it'd be nice to see a new young challenger.

Not quite Peter Svidler + Sopiko Guramishvili, but if you turn the volume down and squint . . .

I don't even think there's a big legal risk for them. No one owns the moves that are being played.

I remember years ago reading about how you can't do anything about your game being submitted by your opponent to a magazine etc.

Because there's no intellectual rights for your chess moves (or something).

Exactly (IANAL either, of course, but still). They do have intellectual property of their own broadcast, and they can allow or restrict third party live coverage with cameras from the venue. They cannot prevent someone watching the moves being played, then making the same move on their board and analysing them. Not even if that analysis then is being broadcast. That's the intellectual property of the "2nd" broadcaster.

So Anand Carlsen III?

Old man still may have some fight left! Hopefully not as much as someone else though .
