I think they are both semi-broken at this point. I can't think of anything else to explain what's going on.

And it's not like Ra1 was the only winning move either.

Nxg2 wins easily as well.

Yeah, I guess, Magnus saw Nxg2 too (an Arabian mate threat in the 39. Qe2 Nh4 40. Qxb2 Rxb2+ line, yum) but he surely also saw that Ra1 was winning both the queen (for a rook) and eventually the bishop because the mating attack was so strong.

Qh6!!11!!1! What a brilliant finish for the books and Carlsen's birthday present to himself!

A Queen sacrifice to clinch a world championship is a great ending.

Though, the game was won even without the flashy ending.

Fun fact: the tiebreaks were illegally broadcast on Youtube (with hundreds of viewers) by a Russian FM whom I used to beat at the local chess club when we were both in middle school. PJSalt

It was still a great finish even without the blunder that led to the queen sac, since if Black had played ...Bf8 instead of ...Kh7, White still mates (eventually) after Rxf8+, followed by Rxf7+.

Thank goodness. I don't think I could handle karjakin as works champ. Magnus did a great job keeping his composure after game two. Seemed like a recipe for him to overpress like the game he lost.

Ironically, there's one more way Carlsen's win in the 4th tiebreak game is historic - it has made him the first player to ever have a rapid rating above 2900 (he's now 2906).

As far as I understand, 4 players achieved a blitz rating above 2900 in their careers: Carlsen (2948 at peak), Grischuk (2923), Nakamura and Karjakin (both 2906).

This must be the real reason he allowed it to go to tie breaks

It's hard to watch this tbh. K is going to be champ. Put in a magician.

I said Magnus might quit chess.

Sick finish with Qh6+!

Both chessbase.com and chess.com have free articles with grandmaster analysis of all of the games.

My favourite chess-story is Nimzo getting up on the table and shouting "Gegen diesen Idioten muss Ich verlieren!" when losing to Sämisch, and I love Kasparovs huge ego and Carlsens arrogance, because they so they back up their arrogance with skill and superiority.

So chess-wise, Karjakin is very unlike all the other chess-idols I have. It's just that he's such a sweet, lovable underdog of chess.
Bringing this back to admit I was wrong and those who back then spoke against Karjakin were right.

I'm sorry. Karjakins nonsense in the past few days clearly prove me an idiot for thinking he was just a charming nerd with casual ties to Putin.

Well, back then only Crimea was a reference and Karjakin wasn't too outspoken at the time iirc. His recent posts only surprised me in that they were completely unnecessary and he very easily could have just kept chilling in Dubai on vacation high-fiving local taxi drivers without ruining his career.

Yes, him going out of his way to defend Putin and the war when he could've just shut up is what really surprises me too.

He does not have the excuse of being someone who has a wrong view of things because he's only exposed to Putins propaganda either - for someone with full access to the actual truth of what is happening to be defending Putin these days is just evil.
