BJJ might have to add another name to his prodigy watch.

Andreas Kelires, from Cyprus, born 1999, rated 2216. Doesn't sound like a prodigy, does it? Well, so far in the Olympiad he is 8/9 and is gaining 138.8 points. That is One Hundred Thirty Eight point Eight points. In 9 rounds.

His initial rating was 1702, in May 2010. Now, four years later, his live rating is around 2350. What is more interesting is that he has achieved these gains with a relatively small amount of games, compared to other prodigies who play a ridiculous amount of games.

Not up to par with everyone else on BJJs list yet, but if he starts playing more... who knows what will happen

Those numbers put him in a similar camp with Chandra, where his current rating doesn't really compare that favorably to other top prodigies (he's still almost 300 points behind Wei Yi, also born in 1999), but the rapid ascension keeps him interesting to keep an eye on...

What was up with Carlsen's game vs Saric today??

Started with a somewhat dubious opening choice, and then he played the game very UnCarlsen like.

YKW post needs more love. Was amazing.

Topalov was candid about his WC aspirations (or lack thereof):

Apparently a player died in hospital after collapsing during the final round. Tragic news.

Well crap. That sure puts a damper on things. Terrible way to close out such an otherwise great event

Well, that's variance; to organisers' honour, they did everything in their power to resuscitate the victim and soothe the pain of those who witnessed it.

I thought that things wouldn't get worse after the historic reverse fool's mate and bad Carlsen's performance (a small feast for Croatia and Ivan Šarić, though) but so optimistic and wrong I was

I guess the one saving grace for all those godawful women's games is that it's a lock that nobody back home has enough of a clue about chess to be paying any attention. Quite a few of them have to be <1000 USCF level.

Nothing serious, just merely +5 =2 -2 and -7.3 to the live rating (so now it's 2869.7).

Mato Jelic' reviews of Magnus' Olympiad defeats:

vs Naiditsch,
vs Šarić.
