The time has come to determine a challenger for the 2011 Chess Forum Championship. To that end, an invitational Candidate's Tournament will begin this Saturday, August 13th. The winner of this tournament will earn the right to face off in a match against Nezh, the current Forum Champion, for the undertitle of "2011 2+2 Chess Champion".
The field and pairings will all be announced Friday night, and the tourney will officially begin on Saturday. For now, I will just post the structure and rules.
This will be a three-round knockout tournament. The eight players will be seeded 1-8, with seeds 1-4 going to automatic qualifiers (in order of their position on the current ratings list*), and seeds 5-8 going to wild-card competitors in order of their ratings. Round one will pair seeds 1 vs 8, 2 vs, 7, 3 vs 6, and 4 vs 5. Round two will pair the 1/8 winner vs the 4/5 winner, and the 2/7 winner vs the 3/6 winner. The final round will pair the two remaining players.
Each round will consist of two games played on FICS with a time control of 15'2". Should the match be tied 1-1 after those two games, two additional games will be played at 5'2" time controls. Should the match remain tied after the fourth game, additional pairs of games will be played at 3'2" time controls until the tie has been broken and a winner determined. The higher seeded player will have the choice of color in game one, and colors will alternate in all subsequent games.
Players will have a maximum of two weeks from the time pairings are announced to complete their match. That includes contacting their opponent, scheduling the match, and ensuring that it is played. Players are encouraged, but not required, to announce when their match will occur in this thread prior to playing, so that the rest of us can railbird if we choose. This will be particularly encouraged for the finals. PGNs, or ficsgames.com links, for all games are to be posted in this thread after matches are completed.
Of course it should go without saying that all games are to be played fairly, following all normal rules of chess which could possibly apply to an online game. No assistance from outside sources (including databases, chess engines, or other players) is allowed during the games. Of course, knowing the field, I really have no hint of worry on this front, and I'm sure things will go smoothly. In the extremely unlikely case of a dispute of any kind, though, I will ask that all issues be raised privately with me. I will not tolerate public accusations or discord. All I want to see in this thread is games, results, analysis, and friendly trash talk and banter. The ultimate underlying rule of this entire event is: have fun!
I think that covers all the rules. As I said, I'll post the field and the pairings in two days. In the meantime, enjoy speculating

*I mentioned the 2+2 ratings list. I should clarify that I have updated it to include all games played in forum tournaments so far, including the most recent 2+2 Open VII. I am not, however, posting those new ratings because I'm really not happy with my method of calculating a new "start list" off of the entire database each time games are played. I want to switch over to a more normal elo style method like, you know, just about every chess organization uses. Until I complete that project of re-rating all the events that have been held so far, I don't plan to post a new ratings list. The downside of this is that it leaves the seeding and wild-card selections for this tournament much less transparent than they would other be. I would like to think, though, that noone will be bothered by this, and that you all trust me to have done all that fairly
