Re: 2+2 Correspondence Championship (Chess.com)

Okay, I just asked Houdini...

The diagrammed position is a draw (0.27). However when we were playing, my feeling was that it is lost for me. Three connected pawns look very menacing...

As it turns out, 52. Bd4 is a mistake (-1.3 at depth 19). Both of my lines given above win as well for Black, as wlrs has already pointed out. In fact, after 52. Bd4 every line I looked at is won for Black, though the computer always needs some time to see it (depth 20 and beyond).

But I don't know if it's right to evaluate such an unbalanced position with Houdini. It's a different story in a practical game.

yeah i think it's knee-jerk thinking (omg 3 passers for an exchange and a pawn, has to win). I thought the same too at first sight when I looked at your game but then it becomes visible that Black manages to wedge his king between the pawns and draw (after which you can even start to look for winning chances but there aren't enough of those)

*bump*

I just resigned the last running game of the 1st 2+2 correspondence championship, making Sholar the winner. Congratulations to him!

I saw that the tournament started on November 27th 2011. I think we should have another one, how about starting it roughly one year after the last one? I could TD it if that's fine with everyone.

Congratulations Sholar! Hail to the Champion! :-) Also congratulations to wlrs and Noir for Silver and Bronze. I am happy to have reached the final round, but there you guys were definitively too strong for me. :-)

I was following the final game during the last weeks. Very interesting, especially since it was effectively a game for first place.

All in all, it was a fun tournament and I would take part in a new one.

Congrats Sholar!

It was fun, I would be interested in doing it again too. I think we have a good spread of talent to make this interesting.

Congrats

I'm up for another one. I guess the easiest is just to invite everybody in the group and see who turns up.

If I remember correctly by winning this Sholar wins entry into the yearly "best of the best" tournament?

Re: 2+2 Correspondence Championship (Chess.com)

Ok if i get green light from some forum authority i'll set up the tourney. In the prolongated absence of our forum tournament director BJJ i'll take an OK from roundtower as 2+2 mod or alternatively from our chess.com admins Cadaz or wlrs. I propose same parameters as last time (5-men groups, 2 advance, both games at the same time, 3 days time control, yes vacation). If we get significantly more players than last time, i'd change the format to 6-men groups to speed things up a little and not get more than three rounds.

Starting date would be exactly one year after last one, 27. November 2012.
