Hah, just yesterday a funny thing happened. I was playing GNU, and pointed on him with an early 53. Against my two point board, GNU now rolled 63 three times in a row, staying on the bar. I found myself wishing it had a face so I could see it.

I find it curious that the vast majority of respondents here downplay the importance of variance reduction, while in my experience somany players deep down experience their backgammon succes as an intellectual victory and vice versa. But it is weird when malicious pleasure is to be deemed even more important than variance reduction.

Good backgammon players know that they have a skill edge despite the variance.
But they like the variance because it makes bad backgammon players think they lost because of bad luck (variance).

Yes, but probably that skill edge really translates into success when there is a big skill gap, something which is mentioned before by Fllecha. There are several reasons for this: the loss of information in games and matches, the underdog psychology and the reality of the "flow".

We are not discussing here the abolition of variance, but the reduction of it. The argument that a high variance tempts bad players to empty their pockets is just a little better than the one about sadistic entertainment.
