GnuBG throws strange dice?

I can't help having my doubts about GnuBG's penchant for miracle dice throwing. I know it doesn't make sense but it keeps happening, day after day.
And as for getting one man in from the bar I suspect GnuBG doesn't even know the odds, because the outcomes don't seem to bear any relationship with the odds.
Very dodgy

That should be fine, as long as you do not play with it for real money.

Talking Re: GnuBG throws strange dice?

The better one plays, the less likely one is to suggest that bots cheat. Among the Giants of Backgammon, I know of none who make the accusation. The following thread contains no fewer than 10 suggestions for checking up on your bot. On page 3, I summarize them all.

Here is a testimonial from the maker of eXtreme Gammon. He has read the source code for GnuBg, and even though it is a competitor, he states flatly that GnuBg does not cheat.

The problem is just that these programs are so darn good. When you sit down to play against one of them, your opponent is literally one of the 10 best backgammon players to have ever played the game. Sure, they win when the dice run hot, but they also win with ordinary dice. You tend to remember the hot streaks, and ignore the other games and matches. When we humans have a hot run of dice, we tend to remember that we won, and discount the many ways we were lucky.

Re: GnuBG throws strange dice?

I appreciate what you say Taper_Mike and you are undoubtedly correct in all that you say.
I have read the details on the GnuBG algorithms etc etc and I know that I'm playing a much beter player than me, who makes no mistakes. This just makes it all the harder when he throws a 17 to 1 shot, on demand, to get out of a deep hole and turn the game completely.
Now I can understand a 17 to 1 shot coming off about 1 time in 18 :-) But it's currently running at about evens! Seems dodgy to me.
And don't get me started about getting one man in off the bar with 4 open gates! The odds of doing so (8 to 1 ON, or 1 to 8 if you prefer) just do not resemble what is happening here. My first roll in these circumstances seems to be a dependable 6-6. Very strange. And of course by the time my 3rd or 4th roll has occurred his house is closed up. Hmmm.
To save time and aggravation I just call GnuBG the cheat and when it's going against me to this extent I just close the game.
Thanks for the links. I'll be reading them after typing this :-)
