I can't figure out how to move checkers in GNU without actually playing a game. I want to be able to move checkers around to play through different openings, for example. It seems the only way I can ever move checkers is if I somehow start a game, but then the computer rolls the dice for me and I can't move as I wish.

After you hit "New" you can checkmark the box called "Manual dice" and then you can input the rolls. If you want to control movement for both sides you can choose human vs. human.

Doesn't really work, because I want to manually move through different responses to an opening roll, but after I choose one response I can't undo the move and choose another roll.

I am not sure it is what you are looking for, but you might try Edit mode.

Click Edit on the toolbar, and then use the left mouse button to position checkers for Player 1 (bottom), and the right mouse button to position checkers for Player 0 (top).

You can search for help on Edit mode to learn more.

Depending on what you are looking for another option is this site: http://www.bgonline.org/

Has pretty much all the opening replies rolled out.

Note: The site is down atm, but will likely be up and running within 24 hours.
