Depends on how one learns. I can't learn from books, but by playing better players. I find that trying your hardest to win against better players, along with constant practice helps more than reading. There's just so much going on in the game strategic wise that it becomes second nature after a while.

For a discussion of some excellent beginning books, see these these threads.

Judging by your mention of Holland’s second book, you may not be a rank beginner. If you are not, get Magriel, but buy Bagai’s book to get the corrections.

Also great for intermediates is Robertie’s 501 Problems.

501 Essential Backgammon Problems

Holland’s Better Backgammon is quite good in the analysis of the problems it covers, but it costs more than 501 Problems, and is not nearly as comprehensive.

Hi

i like to replay analysed games - its a bit more entertaining imo.
In Modern Backgammon by Bill Robertie you get a good deal of the important principles in Backgammon. The later part of the book has these principles in action with a very well analysed match. My favourite Bg book.
