Who won the first World Backgammon Championship? Who was the first man to win it twice? Who was the only man to win it three times?

American Tim Holland, who recently passed away at the age of 79.

You can read about the 3 backgammon books he authored here. To read about some of Tim's exploits, have a look at Fast Company: How Six Master Gamblers Defy the Odds - and Always Win by Jon Bradshaw.

Perhaps Bill can say a word or two about Tim.

Just read his section in Fast Company...very interesting. Saw a great documentary about the Clermont club that focused mainly on the English aristocracy losing millions at chemin de fer and never realised how much backgammon action there was going on there.

Sounds like insane times when the games were in full swing there - tigers and midgets at parties and fortunes and estates won or lost every night.
