I was talking about live play in clubs around the country. No one in his right mind plays backgammon for serious money online. You will either be playing world class players or you will be cheated.

There were some non top players in Greece that made some money in the former play site play65. Nevertheless I won't recommend play for money either offline nor online if you want to make friends. Friends never play for money.

I would find it difficult to get fully involved in a social game for no stakes. I play often with friends for money, but the stakes are relatively minimal. The winner will pay for his drinks and meal with his winnings, with a bit of change on a good night.

In Greece half of the population play backgammon (tavli) with no stakes at all. And they fully enjoyed it. It is just another aspect of life.
