I'd probably quietly go 13/6 and wait to see what develops next roll.

White has the better board right now, and he's 32 pips down in the race, which isn't nearly enough to play a deep backgame. So I'll go for contact plus the chance to upgrade my anchors. My play: 24/20 24/21.

computer has 24-20 24-21 being the best move and it's not even that close.

I'm not sure if I understand this one, I read your rational, but still... putting 2 pieces into that full attack?

see this way to simplfy: as a very general rule of thumb to have a well timed backgame is to have a pip difference as much as the pips given by your backmen. Since you backmen "has about 90 pips" you should trail by about 90 to have a good timing.

You now have ONLY about 30 pips difference and you need three times better than that.

playing 24/20 24/21 gives you the OPPORTUNITY to being hit and GAIN (yes) more trailing pips maybe dancing to well-time your game.

Thanks for your comments!

What about playing 13-6 now and worrying about fixing your timing later. That way you have a piece to apply some pressure on his two open blots in my board?

couple of reasons against it I see.
1) you have no time to do it later, better to do it now, usually it is best to do the hardest task first in backgammon when you get the number for it.

2) you don't have enough ammunition to do a frontal attack when you have 4 checkers in your opponents homeboard.

3) you pretty stripped when you play 13/6, only spare to play is on your 6point and if you don't succed in escaping backcheckers your current structure will crumble and you have to break points.
