Yep. If you hit only one and close, he's still a big favorite to win the game.
If my checker gets hit I lose 20+ pips. Hitting his 2nd home board checker only gets me back those 20+ pips. So at best I come out even.
The reality is that these pips are not created equal. If I can keep either of his men on the bar I can make up those 20 pips in no time. But he can't go anywhere until I've borne off most my men, in all likelihood.
