Caltech has an 18 part online course on general machine learning (18 youtube videos of the lectures) that is made freely available at this link. Not sure how in depth you were looking for.

Once you have a basic understanding of machine learning and neural networks a good starting place for understanding the Grandfather of all Backgammon Neural nets you may wish to read this article about TD Gammon. TD-Gammon (temporal difference) was the first neural network that played Backgammon created by Gerald Tesauro (IBM). Most neural networks for Backgammon are based upon some form of this work.

Gerald also made available some basic code called Pubeval that may be of interest as well at this link

cool, thanks. Btw, I really think the work you guys are doing in providing this technology to the public for free is truly a kind deed. If the only bots available had to be paid for, I might have never gotten into backgammon.
