Kit Woolsey's new book, The Backgammon Encyclopedia Volume 2, is now available for purchase on the Gammon Press website. The new book is an extension of Volume 1, with cube reference positions for 10 new categories:

1) Early Advantage
2) The Semi-Blitz
3) One Man Back
4) On the Bar
5) Containment
6) Hitting a Blot
7) Escape
8) Priming
9) Crunching
10) Racing

There's also an excerpt (in the Blog section of the website) from the start of Chapter 2, to give some of the flavor of the book. Enjoy!

been a long time coming! XG2 rollouts, I imagine?

Of course. I don't think anyone would publish a book today without rolling every position out in XG. The value of a book now lies in the author's explanation of the reasoning behind a play.

I was the editor and publisher for the book, so I've been through it very thoroughly. (If you find a typo, blame me!) I like it a lot. Kit's chosen a very useful collection of position types to benchmark, and his explanations and observations are, as always, right on the mark.

An updated version of '501' should be available by July or August, according to Cardoza Publishing. I rewrote about 40 problems to reflect rollouts from XG2.

My book arrived in the mail today.

Enjoying it so far and recommending it to anyone as filling a gap in the literature. However, one serious flaw is that the diagrams don't include the win/loss and gammon information. This is very important to understanding the value of each relative position but unfortunately it is missing!

Wow, is this so? That's slightly uncomfortable. Being able to estimate gammons is an important skill to adjust cube action at certain match scores.

Would it be faux pas to ask the author for sharing the bot output info in the form that's of no use to someone without a book? Like "position 1 - ND, D/T, D/P win/g/bg %", without any diagrams? It would save all the manual work of inputting all the positions into XG, then CPU time to run the evals, then manual work again of writing down the values.

Agree that the raw data is super helpful, and it might make the difference between my buying it nor not, fwiw.
