Can someone please post an example of when it would be possible to move either die but not both dice. I would like to set up a mock up on my backgammon board. Thank you.

Put 14 checkers on your own ace point. Put the last one on the other side of the board, with the opponent holing a point seven points downstream. Now roll a seven.

This situation of being able to move either but not both dice always seems to involve a single runner. When I say runner I mean a point occupied by only one of your color of checker. I'm curious at this point if this either but not both situation can ever occur when it is possible to move more than one checker.

It's not clear what you mean by this. Do you mean having two checkers on the same point and being able to move one die from there but not both? That would be impossible because you could use one checker for one die and the other for the other.

If you want to try to construct positions, I recommend looking at 61 rolls because those are visually easy to work with. Start by putting out two checkers and blocking 1s for one and 6s for the other. And then also block 7s for both. You can try adding a third checker and doing the same. That should give you some sense of what's going on. And then add a third checker to block and see what happens.
