you don't need any. just find someone who's worse than you and is willing to play for adequate stakes forever.

if you refer to online backgammon, then main qualities to make any kind of living have very little to do with a skill level as well. befriend and know all fun players by name (they are few and far between) and bumhunt relentlessly, never give any action to anyone with a clue, actively lobby site administration to flag other grinders as bots (gl with that)

In general, having no conscience helps

however, I don't recommend this sort of "career" to anyone, even grinding out $10/hr on pokerstars is about 100 times easier

Additionally I can recommend you to read the book Confessions of a Sociopath: A Life Spent Hiding in Plain Sight. It tells you not just how to be successful in backgammon, but in life in general.

Winning 10$ an hour is easy - not losing 10$ an hour is harder.

In this link, MCG, who is one of the best players in the world, talks about how he become a professional player.

The only people I see consistently making money in backgammon are very good players and tournament directors (who don't make much).

Trying to make money long term by betting on backgammon online is a very bad idea. Stop it.

Read the bok according to your purpose and let the other players to help you. Try to make friends with other players and play for small bets - that`s is the secret of success that will help you to develop high personal qualities as a player. Good luck!
