Howdy All,

Thanks for everyone who has contributed over the years, and to all the
users who have provided feedback and assistance!

Since beta 1.00 we have been using a stronger neural net that seems to have mitigated some even/odd ply effect. The Depreli study is one benchmark that is used to compare bots. For comparison, the 2012 Depreli update can be reasonably compared with the numbers that I have produced with the older neural network and the new (1.0x) neural network.

One may note that 2ply (WorldClass) v1.00 outperformed (for the Depreli positions) v0.90 4ply. The biggest changes are cube actions for Grandmaster, and cube handling overall.

Caveat: These studies focus on positions that come up in bot-versus-bot play. Human-versus-human play might yield different types of positions.

Xavier, Frank Berger, Michael Depreli and I have done some preliminary work for the next Depreli study, and I'm under the impression that the earliest such a study would be forthcoming would be in 2014.

Thanks!

Thank you, Michael, and all of the other developers who have made GnuBg a world-class backgammon program.

Your efforts have given me many hours of fun and learning.

There are a few versions of OS/X GNUBG available. Go here: http://gnubg.org/index.php?itemid=22 . This gives some download info and releases for OS/X. Heed the warning that you NEED the latest version of Xquartz/Z11 installed. A link for that is in the description on that page. Install Xquartz package. Download the version of GNUBG for your system. You MUST drag the GNUBG application that is INSIDE the DMG to the /Applications folder. It will not run from anywhere else. The first time GNUBG runs it will take a while to load (1-2 mins) be patient. Subsequent loads will be much faster.

Because of Apple licensing issues GNUBG is not available for the iPhone/iPad platforms.

guys, I tried to download the new version and I think I screwed up somewhere along the way.

I downloaded x11quartz. Then I installed it. Then I downloaded the new GNU but when I tried to move it into the applications folder it asked me if i should replace it for the older version. I click yes and it said it couldn't do it because the item droplet.rsrc is in use.

can anyone show me how to fix this?

thank you

I'm so terrible at this computer stuff. I think I tried replacing the old gnu with the new one that it's all screwed up. I think I was able to do it successfully, but now when I try to open it it tells me that it cannot open because of a program error. So now I don't have ANY bot to study with at all!!

Glad you got it going. I was unaware you had an older version of GNUBG. You had to have made sure it wasn't running (including closing X11/Xquartz). Dragging an application will not complete if files are already in use. As a last resort I would have recommended rebooting and doing the drag afterwards.

There were a couple new boards added over the years, but I'm unsure how old your previous release was. You can always change the board appearance through Settings/Board appearance. This allows you to change the board type and select 2D/3D mode.
