Cube theory question Cube theory question

Setting aside the clear blunder in not doubling, I'm wondering why missing the first cube was such a bigger mistake than missing the second. Our winning chances were even higher in the second position and our gammon chances remained at zero, so to me it seems like missing the second cube should be an even bigger blunder than the first, yet XG tells me it's far more forgivable. Why?

The closer your equity approaches to 1, the less advantage you receive from doubling, because the maximum equity increase from doubling is 1 minus your current equity (assuming your opponent is taking/passing perfectly).

Thanks, that makes sense, and it also explains why failing to cube the next turn didn't even register as an error when the game was essentially won regardless.
