Get Extreme Gammon. Trice's book is excellent, but at your stage lots and lots of practice is essential, and XG will give you a chance to play a world-class opponent whenever you want. (It's also much stronger than XG Mobile or any of the other BG apps for phones.) Right now, you need to see patterns develop and game plans play out, and hours of practice are the best medicine for that.
When you practice against XG, be sure to play money game sessions, NOT matches. Proper checker and cube action in matches is heavily dependent on the score, which will add an extra level of confusion and actually slow down your progress.
