If you clear the 8pt first, and retain the bar point, then 5 is your trouble number. While you are waiting for a safe roll that clears the bar point, anytime you roll a 5, you will be forced to play 6/1. It is easy to get into trouble if you roll a couple of 5s in row.
When you clear the bar point before clearing the 8pt, then 6 is your trouble number. But while you are waiting for a safe roll that clears the 8pt, you don't have to play your 6s. The gap is less dangerous than you might think. If you roll a 1, you can often shuffle spares inside.
