Black - Pips 164
Black to Play 5-3

What should I be thinking about in this position? All plays look equally bad to me.

Let's see.

Behind in the race, so we're not in the urge of connecting or defending with 23/18. Our 2pt. anchor might be a backup plan when we fall farther in the race, too.

We can't attack, so let's bring more checkers to the zone boldly, not minding the hits very much, since we're behind anyway, and we have an anchor, and we have equal board with White having an awkward ace pt. blot.

I wouldn't strip the mid with 13/8 13/10. I think 13/5 is better. We might also just go 18/10, but that surrenders outfield control. A compromise might be 18/15 13/8. It threats White's outfield blot and keeps some of the control over his outfield.

How about the board making plays? 6/1 4/1 makes the wrong point in a game that might end up as prime vs prime or a holding game. In both cases, we don't want to kill checkers. 8/3 6/3 trades a good point for a point that I'm not even sure is better. We might not cover the 4pt. gap. It doesn't bring more builders.

I think I'd choose between 13/5 and 18/15 13/8.

Sounds reasonable, thank you!

Not making 18pt, brining more to the zone makes sense to me. As I see it now, moving the blot from 18pt is good, as it can challenge white's blot and avoid getting hit with an ace from white non stripped point, while allowing bringing either 13/8 or 18/10 as an builder or a cover for 4pt.

Opponents bar seems a big step up from 23pt here. I move both back men.

This has been up for a while, so I don't mind doing this.

For anybody who hasn't put it to a computer, yet, my XG on my tablet says this:

Spoiler:
Least bad is 18/10.
Almost least bad is 18/15 13/8
Bad #1 is 13/5
Bad#2 is 13/10 13/8
Worst is 23/18 13/10

I imagine any other move of the back men is outright suicide.

My instinct was to advance the back checkers.
