Hi!

I have updated Backgammon Studio with version 2.7 which has a varied mix of cool stuff!

I will be holding a presentation of Backgammon Studio at Nordic Open next weekend: Nordic Open

Another reason to visit this awesome tournament! :-)

Backgammon Studio 2.7

Improvements since 2.6:
  • A couple of new training tracks:
    • Holdup! Holding game cubes is a common sight. Hone it to perfection!
    • Holdup checker! Holding game checker play is a cornerstone of middle game play. Practice makes perfect!
  • A couple of new action tags:
    • Jump checker or not.
    • Play behind anchor or not.
  • Luck and evaluation level is now kept while importing and displayed in the move list/evaluation area.
  • Animated checkers.
  • Auto play match: Bring out the popcorn and put an interesting match on. Lean back and enjoy!
  • More board layout improvement (using full height for information panel.
  • Board settings that fit phone and can be opened from the board.
  • Compare matches.
  • Decending order for match list so the latest matches are at the top.
  • Server chat dialog.
  • Duel from anywhere with new server chat and users list dialogs.
  • Shortcut bonanza! More control key direct access to sections:
    • ctrl-a: Annotated matches
    • ctrl-b: My bookmarks.
    • ctrl-c: Play classic challenges.
    • ctrl-h: Home screen.
    • ctrl-i: Import matches.
    • ctrl-m: Matches list.
    • ctrl-h: Home screen.
    • ctrl-o: Player overview (average PR view).
    • ctrl-p: Position forum.
    • ctrl-q: Play training tracks (ctrl-t can't be overridden).
    • ctrl-s: Player statistics.
    • ctrl-v: View match errors.
  • Dynamic hitting throws dialog. Move checkers on the board and see how the number of hits changes.
  • What you have been waiting for: Ads! :-) But only visible before you log in (unless you enable it later).
  • Training track duels: You can now duel in 'Opening reply' and most of the other training tracks.
  • More databases. There is now an advanced/intermediate/beginner database. Content is a bit limited at the moment as usually it is only matches from top ranking players that are published.
  • Move bookmarks: You can move several selected bookmarks in one go instead of moving them one by one.
  • You have x new messages! message when you log in if you have received a message while logged off.
  • Player strength selection. When you switch to the databases section you are asked for estimated player strength.
  • Premium alert dialog. You will get a dialog with an option to enable ads if you click on premium content.
  • Register help. Register dialog has been cleaned up and contains some help information in connection with registering.
  • Server chat notification. If you have server chat open but the Backgammon Studio tab is not visible you get a notification when a message arrives.
  • Switch database help. You get some help information when you switch to your private database to guide you.
  • +Some bugfixes.

Some images

Pehaps difficult to show with a static image but checkers animates from original position to target position. Try it out and see if you like it. This would work well with the auto play match.

Suggested by Travis Roberts.

Click on this button to start an automated play through the entire match. Move the button down to the quick action menu for direct access.

It makes more sense to start with the latest matches at the top of the matches list. I had to import some matches again as I found some incorrect data in some matches.

Register has been cleaned up and displayed as a dialog with some help buttons to guide your choice.

Hitting throws changes when you move checkers on the board.

You can move several selected bookmarks in one go. Suggested by Tore.

Info panel now stretches to the bottom. The area below the board may look a bit empty but:

You can enable the duel chat always on or you can enable ads:

And why would you do that? Well if this generates any noticeable revenue more content can stay public and available to everyone.

You'll see some training tracks that are unavailable. Think of these as carrots for you to be tempted to upgrade! :-)

I think this one is quite fun. After training a lot on some of the training tracks you may want to check if you have made any progress and challenge some friends to a duel to see who is the king! Demand a rematch if it doesn't go so well! :-)

Evaluation level and luck is useful info to have displayed.

Open the find player dialog and locate the first player then click on the switch button and start typing the second name.

When importing to an existing tournament is is smart to explicitly state the tournament name as the data in the XG files can be very varied and inconsistent. When you start typing tournament suggestions will show up. By the way I suspect these two tournaments are the same.

If you suspect duplicates in your database you can click on 'Compare' then on two matches to check if they are the same.

A help dialog show up with you switch to your private database. You can click on the buttons on this help dialog to switch between the sections mentioned.

When entering the databases section for the first time you are asked for estimated player strength. This is just to give you an indication that you really shouldn't start to compete in databases below your current strength and spoil the fun for players that are on this level.

This section is currently limited to premium users but I'll open it up to everyone once I have found more useful content here. Where to get intermediate/beginner matches though?

If you want a private shared database for your backgammon club or organization let me know.

A message when you log in about new messages.

Almost perfect fit for my phone!

Server chat window. This is useful to have open to see when potential duel opponents show up! I'll probably be there most of the time so if you have a quick question just ask! You can also just email me with any question/problem you have. Especially if you see something wrong. I might not be aware of the problem!

If you move away from the Backgammon Studio tab you may still catch the message while it is still fresh.

Open the users list and click on a player to open the duel dialog.

New training tracks.

New action tags. I made a very big mistake in connection with jumping a checker and not hitting the other day so I had to make this action tag to identify this type of position. I was drinking beer and was having fun at the time but unfortunately the match was recorded... But I see I'm not the only one who has made this mistake.

In other news

Imported the matches I could find from 2002.

Average PR list for this year shows Stick is doing well! And I'm on the top 20 list! :-) But perhaps not for much longer.. Ah yes that football was perhaps a bit daft (I'll change it on desktop) but I wanted to make this view fit (somewhat) on my phone also.

Almost heaven? Well.. maybe not but getting closer! :-)
